Shocker! Edu minister demands funds from students for flood-hit schools | | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report ANANTNAG, May 16: In a shocking diktat, the Mufti-led collation government has asked schools heads to collect funds from the poor students for repairing the school buildings which were damaged in last year's floods. The diktat has come from the Education minister Syed Naeem Akhtar Andrabi, directing school principals in south Kashmir to charge extra Rs 500 from the poor students for repairing the school buildings. "My daughter told me that the teachers at girls higher secondary school are demanding Rs 500 from the students for repairing the building. So for verifying the same I went to school in the morning and the Principal there accepted that they have collected money from the students for repairing the school building," Mohammad Ismail, a resident of Duptayar, Bijbehara told Early Times. He termed it callous and said that government must revisit this anti-people decision. "Only poor are enrolling their wards in government-run schools. So how can they pay for repairing damaged school buildings who themselves suffered huge losses due to floods," said another resident Mohammad Amin. A student of government boys higher secondary school Bijbehara also said that they have paid Rs 500. "All students were asked to pay Rs 500 and those who did not pay were not in allowed to sit in classes," he said, pleading anonymity. He said that clerical staff even denied admission to freshers. "I spotted few fresh admission seekers roaming outside the school and told me that the clerical staff is demanding Rs 500," he added. Chief Education Officer Anantnag, Mushtaq Ahmad Salroo said that he has only passed the directions of Education minister to concerned school principals. He, however quickly added that he has asked them now to stop collecting money from the students. The Education minister, on his part, admitted to have issued the diktat. "Actually we wanted involvement of parents. We are not forcing the poor to pay. Only those who are willing to contribute were asked," he said. Pertinently, Naeem Akhtar met Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani a few days ago and sought her intervention for early release of funds withheld by the Centre under Sarva Shikhsha Abhiyan (SSA). |
