Now Kashmir separatist, mainstream leaders celebrate, mourn together | Bahut Yarana Lagta Hai! | | Abdul Majid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 16: In the eyes of people, separatist and mainstream leaders in Kashmir could be poles apart. But relation between the two camps in times of joys and sorrows seems to have finally come in tune with the evergreen Bollywood dialogue from blockbuster Shoolay: Bahut Yarana Lagta Hai! For the past few months, affinity is publicly growing between separatists and mainstream leaders who are often seen together in mourning or celebrations. The latest remained the death of separatist leader and former Ameer-e-Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu Kashmir Syed Nazir Ahmad Kashani who passed away Thursday in Soura here. While many mainstream politicians including those from National Conference and Congress attended the funeral, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) issued a formal condolence statement. As per the party handout, PDP senior leaders Muzaffar Hussain Baig, Tariq Hameed Karra, party general secretaries Nizamudin Bhat, Rafi Ahmad Mir, Chief Spokesperson Dr Mehboob Beg, Political Adviser to President Peerzada Mansoor Hussain, Chief Coordinators Mufti Sajajd Hussain and Raja Aijaz Ali including all legislators and party leaders have also expressed their condolences on the demise of former Jamaat Chief. The separatists, who having lost footage are struggling for space in public circles, were last month seen attending the funeral of Muhammad Yousuf Shah, the father- in- law of R&B Minister Syed Altaf Bukhari. From the Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, senior leaders including Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, Bilal Gani Lone and Shahid-ul-Islam participated in the funeral at Sanat Nagar. "We went there to covey the condolence message of our chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to the bereaved family. We also expressed sympathies with Altaf Bukhari, who is our friend despite having a different political ideology," said Shahid-ul-Islam who, along with Bilal Lone, attended the funeral had told reporters. Earlier this year when Assembly election results were announced separatist leaders were seen doing the rounds of villas of victorious mainstream leaders. Though no name was mentioned in such news reports, Hurriyat M leader Prof Abdul Gani Bhat voluntarily hinted that there was no harm in meeting friends on the other side. While the prevalent affinity between mainstream and separatist parties has taken common man by surprise, political analysts opine that it was nothing new adding that separatists in the past even fielded their proxy candidates during previous Assembly and Parliament elections. In his recent interview to a Srinagar daily, former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief, Amarjit Singh Dulat who has years of association with the troubled politics of Jammu and Kashmir hinted that separatists have always had a future if they joined mainstream politics and contested elections. Dulat equally opines that separatists like Mirwaiz have a great future in mainstream politics. "I think that Mirwaiz has a great future but he must also realize that opportunities in politics in Kashmir come once in six years. He has to get into some kind of process." Even as people are often surprised when mainstream and separatists share platforms, the former RAW chief believes that talks shouldn't end. As he said in the recent interview: "Guftugu Band Na Ho; Baat Sey Baat Chaley!" |
