Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 12: Six persons including a civilian got injured in a grenade attack outside the Khanyar police station in downtown Srinagar late this evening. Following the incident the area was cordoned off with searches also being carried out.
Police officials told Early Times that at about 8:45 PM suspected militants lobbed a grenade towards a naka party of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel near the Khanyar police station.
The grenade landed near the barricade erected by the security forces resulting into injuries to six persons including a civilian.
Reports said that three police personnel including an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI), two CRPF personnel along with the civilian got injured in the incident. The grenade led to panic in the area and the people ran towards safety. As the incident happened late in the evening, there was very little movement in the area and as such the damage was minimal.
However, sources said that the attack was not on the naka party, but on the police station itself. The sources said that the grenade landed near the entrance of the police station causing injuries to six persons. After the incident the security was beefed up in the area and the other adjacent areas.
Meanwhile, security has also been beefed up in the other parts of the summer capital as the Independence Day is approaching fast. Police and CRPF personnel have erected barricades at many places in the city. Body searches and frisking of the civilians is being carried out at these places since the security forces don't want to take any chance with regard to successful holding of Independence Day celebrations in the city.
In the Lal Chowk area, the police and CRPF personnel carried out a crackdown of the civilians in the evening near the clock tower popularly known as Ghanta Ghar.
The people passing through the area were stopped and asked to prove their identity. Frisking as well as body searches of the civilians was also carried at this place.
It would be in place to mention here that security forces have already sealed some of the roads and lanes leading towards the Bakshi Stadium, the main venue of the Independence Day parade. Police and CRPF personnel have taken position at the vantage points of some of the houses located in the nearby areas of Bakshi Stadium in order to ensure that everything goes on smooth and the day passes off peacefully. Sharp-shooters have also been deputed in the vicinity of the stadium so as to keep a vigil on the activities going on.
