NIA chief unhappy with JK police's CI ops | 'Very disturbed over presence of OGWs in Jammu region' | | Early Times Report jammu, Aug 12: Chief of India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) is purportedly not happy with J&K police's counter insurgency operations in the state particularly its failure to check funneling of funds to separatists groups through hawala. The NIA chief Sharad Kumar on his arrival in Jammu questioned the arrested Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Naved and was given the file of his interrogation by the team which had questioned him for about a week after the Udhampur attack on August 5. Kumar who had already been briefed about the incident and the questioning was more interested in knowing the follow up on arresting his handlers and his financers in the Valley, sources told Early Times. They said the NIA chief was "very disturbed" about the presence of over-ground workers (OGWs) in the Valley and even in Jammu region. "He was also not happy with the checking mechanism put in place by the police which had allowed the situation to come to such a point," said the sources. They said the NIA chief is likely to raise the questioning of 'inadequate' response of the state police in handling the situation especially with regard OGWs and their financers. "The NIA chief on checking the diary of the interrogation of Naved was very much disturbed with the functioning of the police in the Valley. He was also annoyed over the fact that terrorists and the separatists are receiving huge amount of money from across the border through different channels, which remain unchecked. The NIA chief is likely to report the matter to the Home Ministry," said the sources. Sources said one of the main reasons of NIA chief's visit to Jammu was to get abreast with the situation in the state and also question Naved. "He was specifically sent by the Home Ministry to file a report about the working of the police in counter insurgency operations and get first-hand knowledge of the situation in the state and send a detailed report to the ministry. It is for this reason, the MHA decided to give the case to the NIA," said a senior official. |
