jammu, Aug 12: Initiative of the Directorate of Information to engage Assistant Information Officers on contractual basis has left youth of Jammu at clear disadvantage against their counterparts from the Valley, generating lot of anguish and heartburn amongst them.
Facing pressing staff crunch, the Directorate of information contemplated appointment of Assistant Information Officers on contractual basis as it was finding it hard to give due coverage to the activities and programs of Ministers and Government departments. The directorate invited applications from experienced individuals who possessed a master degree in Journalism and Mass Communication with flair for writing.
The eligibility criteria gave inadvertent, but clear advantage to the youth of the valley as the youth possessing a masters degree in Journalism and mass communication in Jammu was far lesser due to absence of a PG department in the subject in the universities of Jammu. "It is a matter of grave concern that the even the University of Jammu, which has been rated quite high by NAAC of the University Grants Commission has failed to establish a department of journalism and mass communication which can offer several job oriented courses" said a scholar of the university. "This department has been established in the Kashmir university since long and a political conspiracy behind depriving Jammu university of the same cannot be ruled out" he added.
Pertinently, SSRB had conducted an exercise to recruit Assistant Information Officers for different districts a few years back, but the selection list was challenged in the court and multiple appeals buried it beneath legal intricacies. Since then, the Directorate of Information has been fraught with pressing staff crunch which had been directly affecting its performance.
"We had conducted a written exam to assess the writing skills of the candidates after short listing the eligible ones and we gave equal opportunity to the youth from all regions, but it is true that the response from Kashmir was more than Jammu for different reasons" said a senior officer in the Directorate. However, the anguish amongst the youth of Jammu has been growing as they allege that there has been a well thought out conspiracy to deprive Jammu youth of equal opportunities.
