Militants strike every third day this year | | | Abdul Majid
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 12: After a few years of "normalcy", militants strike in Jammu and Kashmir every third day and, according to security agencies, militancy is on a new high this year. According to latest police data, the state witnessed as many as 76 attacks in the past seven months, since January 1, hinting that on an average militants strike every third day. Last year, the state had witnessed a total of 86 militant attacks. On one end the Sopore-Pattan stretch in North Kashmir is on fire whereas the entire South Kashmir is turning into battlefield. Srinagar, on the other hand, is intermittently taken by surprise by militant attacks, including three grenade attacks in a day on mobile network last month. Reports from Jammu are equally disturbing. With the latest deadly attack in Udhampur, which left two BSF men dead and many wounded, Jammu province is fast getting unsafe. In north Kashmir, the militancy re-erupted with a bang earlier this year, following a series of attacks on mobile communication network and killing of as many as six civilians till May. As of now militancy seems to be spilling more in the south. Till now eight major encounters have been witnessed in south Kashmir sinceJanuary 15 when five militants were killed in a day in a major gunfight in Gadder Forests of Shopian. Thereafter it was mostly Tral, which remained on boil. On January 27, two Army personnel including colonel MN Rai and two militants were killed in Handoora Village of Tral. On February 26 two militants were killed whereas an Army major was wounded in an attack in Shermal area of Tral. Two days later onFebruary 28, two militants were killed in Rathsuna village of Tral. On April 13 a militant and a civilian were killed in Buchoo area of Tral. The next two major attacks were witnessed in Kulgam district. On May 25, a LeT commander was killed in Kujmulla area of Kulgam. On June 22, a two militants and a civilian were killed and two Army when wounded in Redwani Bala village of Kulgam. However for the past around a month, comparatively peaceful Pulwama has been active on the militancy front. Whereas militants often reportedly managed to give a slip to police, on August 11 one militant was killed whereas two managed to flee from Kakapora Mohalla area of Kakpora Pulwama. In the latest, a 20- hour gun battle was witnessed on August 11 when two militants and a civilian were killed at Ratni Pora Pulwama. The district is observing hartal for the second running day-to-day against the killings. According to the latest official figures with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, there are 185 militants active in J&K and 40 percent of them are foreign mercenaries. "Militants currently active in Kashmir region have managed to carry out multiple attacks in J&K. Seventy of the 77 militants, currently active in south Kashmir, are locals, mostly educated," said a police official asking not to be identified. Unconfirmed reports suggest hijacking attempts by militants especially by the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) to seek release of detained militants. As per reports, Ministry of Home Affairs, has asked the state government to beef up security in and around the airports to thwart such attempts. But the state police denied that there were any such chances of plane high jack. The state police insist that situation is under control. |
