Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 12: Appointment of the former Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab PS Gill seems to have hit a road block as the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday hinted that party is not interested in Gill taking over the top post in Jammu and Kashmir.
The party said its patron and Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, would consider all aspects before giving his final nod.
The PDP's chief spokesman Mehboob Beg said that the Centre would appoint a Governor "but everything will be scrutinized by the Chief Minister before allowing anybody to hold the chair of the next Governor."
Beg, while referring to close association of Gill with National Conference (NC) patron and former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, and his track record while working at different posts in J&K, said that he does not think Mufti would give his nod to Gill's appointment.
"Keeping in view all such details associated with Gill, I don't think Mufti Sayeed will allow this to happen," Beg told Early Times. "Let us first also see how many people are in the panel and then only we can deliberate further on it."
Pertinently, speculations were making rounds that Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has already approved the appointment of P S Gill as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir state and he would be appointed as the new Governor of JK before the Independence-day (August 15).
Soon after the word about the incumbent Governor N N Vohra would be replaced spread his well wishers visited Raj Bhavan here to ascertain the veracity of the news reports.
Sources told Early Times that Gill's appointment has hit a roadblock as PDP has got it conveyed to the BJP central leadership that it should go slow with the proposal of appointing the new Governor in the sensitive state like Jammu and Kashmir. "JK is not like other states where Governor has no role to play. Centre has to take the state into confidence before taking the decision on who would be the new Governor. Centre cannot take a unilateral decision over this sensitive issue," said a PDP leader.
Pertinently, PS Gill, an IPS officer of the Jammu and Kashmir cadre and retired as DGP Punjab, was brought to the state of Punjab from Jammu and Kashmir in 2009 for his appointment as DGP. He also fought the Assembly election in Punjab.
Gill's policing experience in Jammu and Kashmir and his vibrant attitude were the contributing factors in his possible journey towards becoming the next Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
Gill in the last Assembly elections proved his mettle for the BJP by acting as a coordinator in overall paradigms of election campaign in Jammu and Kashmir, which saw BJP delivering an impressive performance and getting 25 seats.
Its in place to mention here that on completion of his first term of five years in 2013, Dr Manmohan Singh's Congress-led UPA government had appointed N N Vohra for another term which would have normally lasted till 2018. However, after the change of regime and Narendra Modi taking over as Prime Minister in 2014, Vohra had offered to quit when the NDA government removed over a dozen of the Governors and Lt Governors appointed by the previous regime.
However, Vohra had been advised to continue with the assurance that Modi's government had immediately no intention to appoint a new Governor in the sensitive State of Jammu and Kashmir.
