Speaker directs release of youth intending to hoist National Flag in Lal Chowk | Post Friday protests break out in Maisuma, downtown areas of city | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 9: Legislative Assembly Speaker Kavinder Gupta today directed the police authorities to release the youth who were arrested while trying to hoist the national flag near the clock tower in the summer capital of state early in the morning. "It is quite unfortunate that the people who want to hoist the national flag are arrested by the police while as on the other hand the anti-national people who hoist the Pakistani flag are never arrested by the police. The police needs to pull up its socks and arrest the people who are involved in anti-national activities," said the Speaker while the House was in session. Gupta said that the youth who wanted to hoist the national flag in the Lal Chowk area should not have been arrested. He said proper security should have been given to the youth since they were going to hoist the national flag. He termed the arrest of the youth as unfortunate and uncalled for. "I have received reports that some of the youth who wanted to hoist the national flag in Lal Chowk area have been arrested by the police. This should not have happened and I pass on directions to Director General of Police to release the arrested youth. At the same time it is important that people hoisting the Pakistani flag are arrested without any further delay by the police," said the Speaker. It would be in place to mention here that two youth owing allegiance to Bharatiya Janta Party reached the clock tower popularly known as Ghanta Ghar at 7 in the morning and tried to hoist the tri-colour. As one of the youth was about to hoist the tri-colour a passerby caught hold of him and dragged him. As such the youth owing allegiance to BJP could not hoist the tri-colour. In the meantime, a party of nearby police station reached the spot and arrested the two youth who wanted to hoist the national flag. However, they could not catch hold of the youth who had prevented them from hoisting the national flag. There are allegations that the two BJP youth passed derogatory religious remarks while being denied to hoist the national flag. Meanwhile, protests broke out in the Maisuma and some other areas of the summer capital after the Friday prayers. Police lobbed dozens of smoke shells on the groups of youth who were protesting against the alleged random arrest of youth and over the beef ban issue. As soon as the Friday prayers were over groups of agitating youth appeared in the Maisuma area and started pelting stones on police and security forces personnel. The youth were protesting against the arrest of JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik who was arrested by the police on Thursday. Malik had plans to carry out a sit in against the random arrest of youth and the issue of beef ban. Most of the areas adjacent to Lal Chowk observed shutdown against the arrest of JKLF Chairman. The ding dong battle between the agitating youth and police personnel carried on for hours together with the protesters getting dispersed only after the lobbing of smoke shells. In the downtown Srinagar posters of Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed appeared after the Friday prayers near the Jamia Masjid. Stone pelting started in the Nowhatta area and spread to the adjacent areas like Khawaja Bazar and Gojwara in no time. The pelting of stones was retaliated by the lobbing of smoke shells by police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel posted in the area. There are reports that at least 100 smoke shells were lobbed by police and CRPF personnel so as to disperse the protesters. |
