Omar says J&K is a Muslim majority state
"We will eat beef to fulfill our religious obligations"
10/10/2015 12:36:53 AM
ET Report
JAMMU, Oct 9: NC working president and former J&K CM Omar Abdullah, who also happens to be the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative assembly, on October 8 was in his true colours when he spoke the language of Mohammad Ali Jinnah in and outside the assembly to tell the country that J&K was a Muslim-majority State and the Muslims of Kashmir would not go against their religion which permits them to eat beef. "The Hindu majority states in the country impose ban on meat to respect the religious sentiments of the Hindu community. We are a Muslim-majority State and why do the Hindu community seek to impose its will on the Kashmiri Muslims when they say their religion doesn't bar them from eating beef," he said while reacting to the Assembly scuffle between independent MLA from Kashmir, Er Rashid, who had hosted beef party on October 7 at the official MLA Hostel, Srinagar, and a couple of BJP MLAs.
He made it loud and clear that his National Conference, like all other Kashmiri parties, Kashmiri clergy, Kashmiri civil society and Kashmiri separatists, had no respect for the sentiments of the non-Muslims in the state and that the majority community would subvert the laws regarding the cow killing and beef eating even if it meant an interference in the religious affairs of others.
Omar's utterances have endorsed the act of blasphemy committed by Er Rashid to outrage the religious sensitivities of the other community. He said Rashid didn't commit any mistake by hosting beef party and to make his ridiculous and nasty point he referred to the October 7 Supreme Court order that put in abeyance the September 8 order of the Jammu bench of the State High Court urging the State Police to enforce strictly Sections 298 A, B, C and D of the Ranbir penal Code and bring to justice those who violate the laws regarding cow killing and sale of beef. He conveniently overlooked the fact that all these laws were very much intact and it was the fundamental duty of the authorities in the state to implement them to establish the rule of law.
It is important to note that the Supreme Court order has not gone down well with the supporters of ban on beef sale and beef eating in the state. Their view is that it is for the State Legislature to retain and maintain any existing law, amend it or scrap it. Since Ranbir Dand Bidhi and the sections it contains have been in force in the state for more than a century and since Sections 298 A, B, C and D are very much intact or have not been deleted from the penal code or amended, these have to be implemented in letter and spirit.
It is disturbing that we have in the state leaders like Omar Abdullah who are discriminatory in their approach and attitude and who openly hurt the religious sentiments of the minority community in the state. It is no wonder then that the people of Jammu region have rejected with contempt the parties like the National Conference. It is a different matter that the BJP which they voted for in the 2014 Assembly elections has also let them down and hurt their religious sentiments to remain in power.
