Mufti hails JK people for rejecting Jinnah's two nation theory | 'Muslims need to be taken on board for real progress in India' | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 9: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said that people of Jammu & Kashmir rejected the two nation theory propounded by first Prime Minister of Pakistan Mohammad Ali Jinnah and instead chose to be a part of secular India. Replying to a resolution moved by leader of National Conference legislature party and MLA Beerwah Omar Abdullah, Mufti said that in 1947 people of the State instead of acceding with Pakistan decided to be a part of Indian Union. He said the people of State believe in secularism and democracy, adding that these have been guiding principles of governance in the State. "Before partition people of the State had a vision of tolerance and this ensured that the two nation theory as put forward by Jinnah is rejected. Successive elections that have been conducted over the past four decades or so in the State have strengthened secularism in the State. This was not the case with the elections that were held during the period before the era of Congress leader Indira Gandhi," said the Chief Minister. Mufti said that people of the State should decide about their future given the fact that some 'communal' forces have started taking shape. He said that Jammu & Kashmir can show the way to the whole nation, adding that India is a country of diversity where there is no room and scope for 'communalism' and hatred. "India is known by the rich diversity it possesses and we are part of the same country. If we want to make India a real power then it is important that people belonging to different faiths and religions are taken on board. Once this happens then India would come up as real force in the world," said the Chief Minister. Mufti said that there are 17 crore Muslims in India and they need to be taken along by the people at helm so that there is real progress in the country. He said Muslims of India have over the years lend support to leaders like Vishwanath Pratap (VP) Singh, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Nitish Kumar as they were considered to be secularists. "People of the State have over the years defeated the divisive and communal elements and strengthened the secular forces. I hope that this would happen in future as well and we would not fall prey to the communal forces that are hell bent on dividing the people of State. The people should remain vigilant and defeat the communal as well as divisive elements," said the Chief Minister. Speaking on the resolution MLA Beerwah Omar Abdullah while referring to physical assault on MLA Langate Engineer Abdul Rashid said the attack was totally uncalled for. He said the attack portrayed a negative picture of Jammu & Kashmir, adding that it is not the real face of the State and the people living in the State. "Gandhiji saw a ray of hope in Jammu & Kashmir at the time of partition and if we are able to carry forward that message then we would have done wonders. However, at the same time we should be tolerant enough and voice of dissent should not be muzzled. The people of the State have always defeated the communal elements and this would not happen in future as well," said Omar. The MLA Beerwah expressed concern that internet services were snapped in Jammu division as the law & order situation went out of control, adding that situation has also turned somewhat bad in Udhampur district. He said that a message should emanate from the Assembly that there is no place for extremists and extremism in the State. |
