Prime Minister announces Rs 80,000 crore development package for JK | Vows to provide relief to flood hit people; No 'hand of friendship' extended to Pakistan | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Nov 7: Announcing a package of Rs. 80,000 crores for the development of Jammu & Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that money would not be any constraint in the overall development of the state. Addressing a public rally here at the Sher-I-Kashmir Cricket Stadium, the Prime Minister said the package would change the destiny of people of state, adding that funds need to be utilized in right direction. He exuded confidence that the package would lead to the solution of problems more so those faced by the youth. "From this place I would like to make an announcement that Rs. 80,000 crores would be provided for the development of Jammu & Kashmir. My wish is that this package changes the fate of people of state. For this it is important that the funds are spent in the right direction and I hope that same would happen," said Modi. The Prime Minister said that New Delhi would not hesitate in releasing more funds for the development of Jammu & Kashmir. He referred to the package as just beginning and said that people of the state should understand that there would be free flow of funds to Jammu & Kashmir in future as well. He said that hearts of people of country beat for the people of state adding that Jammu & Kashmir cannot be separated from the Union of India. Modi announced that Rs. 24,000 crores would be provided for the development of Srinagar-Jammu national highway. He said that since road network holds key to the development of any place same needs to given a fillip in Jammu & Kashmir. He said proper development of road infrastructure would reduce the time span between Srinagar and Jammu. He added that his government stands committed towards the overall development of the state. However, the Prime Minister did not announce any political initiative at the rally and as expected by certain quarters no 'hand of friendship' was extended to Pakistan. He also did not mention about the separatists and did not invite them for any dialogue for solving the Kashmir problem. "The people of Kashmir have suffered a lot due to the turbulent situation and generations have been wiped out. It is my wish that Kashmir comes out of the mess and becomes an island of peace with dignity and compassion. We are taking steps in this regard and these steps would bore fruits in the near future. The people more so the youth would feel the difference and Jammu & Kashmir would traverse on the path of development and progress. More and more people should visit this place as they used to do some 25 years back," said Modi. The Prime Minister said that tourism has to be brought on modern lines to that a tourism place like Jammu & Kashmir reaps the benefits of flourishing tourism industry. He said that 1.75 crore people of the country visit the tourist destinations outside the country. He added that if tourism is developed on modern lines then people would be lured to visit tourist places in Jammu & Kashmir and other parts of country. Referring to the rehabilitation of flood affected people Modi said that the central government would work shoulder to shoulder with the state government in this regard. He said that Rs. 1,000 crores were released for flood hit people immediately after the flood adding that with the passage of time more funds were released. "I felt the pain of the people who were hit by flood and it was due to this reason that I came over here immediately after the flood. We worked with then state government for providing relief to the people hit by flood and we are carrying forward the process of rehabilitation. New Delhi would work in close liaison with state government for the complete rehabilitation of flood affected people," said Prime Minister. The Prime Minister said that no stone would be left unturned in providing meaningful employment to the youth of Jammu & Kashmir. He said that youth of Jammu & Kashmir have performed well in IAS, IPS and IIT examinations. He made a mention of cricketer Parvez Rasool and expressed the hope that international cricket matches would be played in Srinagar soon. Modi said that during his tenure as Prime Minister of India he has been able to root out corruption and embezzlements from the system. He referred to the recent report of Transparency International and said that India has moved from 95 to 85 in the list of corruption free countries in the world. He said that India is being viewed as one of the fast emerging economies of the world and is compared with a developing economy like China. |
