Stable Afghanistan alone can guarantee security stability in Pakistan | Behind the veil | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 7: Already Islamabad is apprehensive of growing ties between India and Afghanistan and hence it has started fabricating events in order to convince the developed nations about the way India was using the soil of Afghanistan for launching terror strikes in Pakistan. Advisor to Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on National Security and Foreign Affairs, Sartaj Aziz, has blamed India for attacks on Pakistan when various terrorist outfits have owned the responsibility for each and every attack that was carried out in Pakistan during the last three years. Throwing to winds all diplomatic niceties Sartaj Aziz has alleged that India is using Afghan soil to carry out attacks on Pakistan. This allegation is being launched by Aziz inspite of the fact that the Taliban or any other terror outfit has been bold enough to claim responsibility for each attack. In the light of these developments Pakistan is bound to feel enraged even if Kabul and New Delhi try to promote cordial ties. And the latest event that has enraged Islamabad is the decision of Kabul to acquire helicopters from India which it could use against terrorists who have received open support from Islamabad. Afghanistan has decided to acquire four attack helicopters from India to help it fight a growing Taliban insurgency, a small but significant deal marking a shift in Kabul's search for allies that is likely to anger Pakistan. Soon after he took over, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani held off military assistance from India while he courted Pakistan's political and military leadership to end years of mutual hostility and steer the Taliban, many of who live in Pakistan, toward negotiations. But a wave of bombings in Kabul that Ghani said were plotted in Pakistan, followed by the Taliban encircling major cities including briefly taking over Kunduz in the north, has prompted a scramble to shore up support in the region. Afghan National Security Adviser Mohammad Hanif Atmar is due in New Delhi this weekend to finalise the transfer of the Russian-made Mi-25 helicopters. And New Delhi has decided to oblige Kabul by transferring MI-25 helicopters because New Delhi believes that stable Afghanistan and Pakistan are beneficial for India. In addition to this India is keen to see that Afganistan is free from the menace of terror which has total support from Pakistan as Islamabad wishes to extend its political influence to Afghanistan. In order to upgrade the security grid to counter the threat from the Pakistan backed Taliban Afghan forces badly need air power to reverse gains by the Taliban and in particular helicopter gunships that have range as well as firepower. What is ironical is the lack of political wisdom on the part of the establishment in Islamabad because for Pakistan's internal and external security a stable Afghanistan is a must.Whether this stability is the result of support from India or from the US Islamabad need not bother about it. |
