Miscreants stone vehicles, 5 hurt | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report Baramulla, Nov 7: At least five people were injured after some miscreants stoned their vehicles on Kupwara-Srinagar road. Several vehicles were also damaged in the incident. According to sources, almost two dozen vehicles were stoned by the miscreants when people from twin districts of Kupwara and Baramulla were returning to their homes after attending Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally at Sheri-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium Srinagar. The vehicles, including Tata Sumos and Taveras, were moving to their destinations when the miscreants appeared on road and targeted the vehicles with stones, said sources. Sources said the vehicles were stoned at HMT, Zainkoote, Narbal and Lawaypora in Srinagar outskirts, Nathipora and Unsoo in Sopore, Selu, Shangergund and Sangrama. Five persons injured in the attacks were identified as Ghulam Nabi War R/O Salamabad Uri in Baramulla district Habibullah Khan, Gulzar Ahamd, Mohammad Akbar, and Azad Ahamd Wani R/O Kupwara district. Large number of people had come to the rally from across the Valley, with a huge number from North Kashmir, particularly of Kupwara district, sources added. Meanwhile, scores of people took to streets in Baramulla district on Saturday afternoon and staged a demonstration at the cement bridge. Security forces resorted to teargas shelling at main chowk of Baramulla town to disperse demonstrators. The normal life was disrupted in major towns of north Kashmir including Kupwara, Handwara, Sopore, Baramulla, Pattan, and Tangmarag. All shops, business establishments, banks, educational institutions and government offices across the north Kashmir were closed while roads wore a deserted look as public and private transport remained off the roads. Train services from Bannihal town in Ramban district to Baramulla town in Kashmir Valley were also suspended for the day. DIG, north Kashmir range, Garib Dass said due to the enhanced security in view of the prime minister's rally, the overall situation was by and large peaceful. He said that a few stray stone pelting incidents were reported from some of the places in north Kashmir like Seelu, Amargarh in Sopore and Singhpora Pattan. "We handled the situation carefully and in a responsible manner," the DIG added. |
