Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 7: The Power Development Department (PDD) is coming up with the curtailment schedule for the winter months in the Valley. As per PDD sources, the schedule would be circulated in few days, and according to it, non-metered areas will reel under more darkness this winter as there will be 64 hours of curtailment per week while there will be weekly 34-hour cut in the metered areas.
The schedule in non-metered areas will be like this. Morning: twice a week off (5 am to 8 am); thrice a week off (8 am to 1 pm); four times a week off (1 pm to 6 pm). Evening: twice a week of (6 pm to 8 pm and 8 pm to 10 pm alternately). Night: once a week off (10 pm to 5 am).
Metered areas: Morning-once a week off (5 am to 8 am); once a week off (8 am to 1 pm); 1 pm to 6 pm (once a week off); Evening-once a week off (6 pm to 8 pm and 8 pm to 10 pm alternately); Night-once a week off (10 pm to 5 am).
The schedule is likely to trigger anger and protests from the public who are already reeling under darkness.
On October 31, Early Times had reported that due to denial of funds by the government to the PDD, there would be serious power shortage this winter. PDD had apprised the government about the outcome of not releasing funds for rectification of the system. Apart from urban areas of the state including Jammu and Srinagar cities, the rural belts would face the worst ever brunt of the power crisis this year, said sources.
This is also for the first time that metered areas will have to witness a weekly 34-hour power cut. "This is utter disgrace for the government. We pay huge electricity dues, but we have to face power cuts," Syed Ghulam Ahmad, a Srinagar-resident told Early Times. "There are crores of rupees being pumped into the state from the federal government. Why has our ruling class failed so miserably to improve state's power scenario," asked a civil society activist Mukhtar Ahmad.
