Chickenpox breaks out in North Kashmir schools, un-cured students rejoin classes | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report BARAMULLA, Nov 14: Dozens of students of primary classes have been affected due to chickenpox and the problem has got worsened since the students have rejoined classes after remaining absent from the school due to the disease. Their rejoining has put the other students to risk on the health front. The parents of the affected school children are sending their students back to schools fearing loss of studies. These students of different educational institutions have rejoined their school without being fully cured. Sources told Early Times that after writing their final exams many kindergarten students returned home from various schools in Baramulla district with chickenpox disease, which has not only affected dozens of students but the family members too. "The reason for break out of the disease at SRM Welkin Sopore was not known immediately. The students who got affected with the disease returned to the school after seven days, even though it requires a period of a minimum of 21 days to be completely cured from the disease," said sources. Although, the chickenpox disease is usually not deadly it can be painful for days together. It can also cause serious complications, including skin infection, dehydration, pneumonia and swelling of the brain. A parent wishing anonymity said that his two children got partially vaccinated after they complained of itches and other body complications. He said that he got concerned when his other three children began exhibiting signs of autism. "I don't know about other students, but it cannot be the only school where disease has broken out," said the parent. There are reports that this disease has broken out in other private schools of North Kashmir. A group of parents alleged that school authorities are in deep slumber. They said the school authorities should have created awareness about the said disease and precautions that need to be taken for stopping the spread of the disease, so that other students could not get affected. A senior doctor at Sub District Hospital Sopore said that Chickenpox is caused by the varicela-zoster virus, a member of the herpes virus family, which spreads through the air or by direct contact with an infected person. The doctor said it produces an itchy, blistery rash that typically lasts about a week and is sometimes accompanied by a fever or other symptoms. "A single attack of chickenpox almost always brings lifelong immunity against the disease. The symptoms of chickenpox are easily recognized and in most cases merely unpleasant rather than dangerous treatment can almost always be carried out at home," said the doctor. He said that severe complications can develop and professional medical attention is essential in some circumstances. |
