BJP in a fix | | | Early Times Report jammu, Nov 14: The Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's November 13 indication that PDP president Mehbooba Mufti could replace him as Chief Minister has divided the J&K BJP leadership. According to reliable sources, "the BJP ministers will have no objection if Mehbooba Mufti replaces her father Mufti Sayeed subject to the condition that the change of guard doesn't effect them". Sources revealed that "they will accept Mehbooba Mufti as Chief Minister". A source very close to one top BJP minister also revealed that "he would want the party high command to adopt the 2002 PDP-Congress' power-sharing formula so that the BJP and the PDP lead the state government for three years each". "The BJP entered into an alliance with the PDP with the understanding that Mufti Mohammad Sayeed will be the Chief Minister for a full term of six years. Now that the Chief Minister has planned to demit his office and hand over the office of the Chief Minister to Mehbooba Mufti, it would be only desirable if my party high command re-negotiate the power-sharing formula with the PDP leadership. If the PDP with 15 MLAs could occupy the Chief Minister's chair between November 2002 and November 2005, why can't the BJP, which has equal representation in the assembly with the PDP, hold the Chief Minister's chair for a period of three years? The state BJP would like the party high command to persuade the PDP leadership to accept the 2002 power-sharing formula," this source further revealed. As far as the BJP MLAs, functionaries in the party and senior members of the BJP are concerned, most of them are against the idea of Mehbooba Mufti taking over as Chief Minister. "We are against the proposed move" was their first reaction. "We will approach our party high command and apprise it of our views. The change of guard will further hurt the interest of the party, which has already been under severe criticism because of its alliance with the PDP. We may consider the move if Jammu province gets equal representation with the PDP both in the Council of Ministers and State Cabinet and if we are reassured that the BJP will head the state government after the PDP completes three years in office. We would also like the PDP to make a categorical statement that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and Pakistan has no locus standi in the state," they told on the condition of anonymity. "We hope our party high command will respect our feelings and act in the best interest of the party, the state and the country," they further told. The fact of the matter is that the J&K BJP is in a fix. |
