Jammu tops crime graph, Udhampur catching fast | Commoners easy prey, criminals breathe easy! | | Syed Junaid Hashmi ET Report jammu, Nov 14: Though Jammu police has managed to bring down the graph of crime in the district but still the number of cases registered in the year 2014 is highest in the state. Jammu district has earned the unique distinction of being the only district in the state which has continuously witnessed increase in the graph of crime since the year 2007. The graph has seen upward trend despite the fact that terror incidents and cross border infiltration has declined to a large extent. Rapes, Abductions, Thefts, Burglaries and Kidnappings have increased significantly in Jammu city as well as in the peripheries. Though the number of cases registered in year 2014 are a little less than what they were in the year 2013. Jammu police registered 4759 cases in year 2013. Rajouri district has bagged second spot among the districts which have shown upsurge in crime graph in the year 2014. 1792 cases were registered in the year 2014 against 1869 reported in 2013. But what could be termed as heart warming for Rajouri police is that number of cases registered in year 2014 are lesser than 2013. Though this cannot be termed as marked improvement in law and order situation but significant does indicate success of Rajouri police in bringing the crime rate down. Third in race is Kathua district which being border town of Jammu region witnesses bootlegging and drug menace of the highest order. The district police in Kathua registered 1350 cases in year 2014 against 1323 cases reported to it in the year 2013. The numbers indicates increase in criminal activities. Kathua police has been lax in tightening screws around drug peddlers and putting an end to the illegal business of bootlegging. The police recently was involved in incident of moral policing wherein a strong posse of police personnel led by SSP Kathua entered inside a recreational park and swooped on the adult boys and girls sitting inside. It was later learnt reliably that the same had the backing of a top BJP leader and his close aides. Udhampur district where police has enough time to harass commoners while allowing goons to roam freely has shown no significant decline in the cases of crime registered by it. Against 1206 cases registered in year 2013, Udhampur police recorded 1201 cases in year 2014. The number is just 5 lesser than what the district police had managed in year 2013. This comes at a time when Chain snatching, assault and drug peddling cases are routinely reported from Udhampur. If the sources are to be believed, local SHOs are seen more often roaming around the local BJP and PDP leaders while doing little to put an end to the menace of drug trafficking and bovine smuggling in the district. They further said that the police official working in various police stations have developed a deep rooted nexus with land grabbers, owing to which the incidents of land grabbing too have increased in the district during the last two years. The district has another notorious distinction of police being unable to bring down the graph of crime despite the fact that they have the lone Member Parliament (MP) Dr. Jatindra Singh as MOS in Prime Minister's Office and the lone MLA as Minister in the ruling BJP-PDP coalition government. The district has failed to contain crime and instead, the police officers have been spending most of the time harassing the commoners and performing the role given to traffic police. Poonch district is 5th in the list with 863 cases registered in year 2014 against 827 registered in the year 2013. This district too has its quit good share in the increasing graph of crime in the district. Overall, crime graph has shown upward trend in Jammu region and if the police does not take normal policing to contain crime seriously, things are likely to go from bad to worst. |
