Mufti keeps political tradition alive | | | Early Times Report jammu, Nov 14: When Mehbooba Mufti replaces her father, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir no one can accuse Mufti of having preferred his daughter to other senior party leaders for the top post. It is part of the political tradition in Jammu and Kashmir. In 1981 Sheikh Abdullah installed his son, Dr Farooq Abdullah, as President of the National Conference when the post should have gone to Sheikh Abdullah's son-in-law, GM Shah. This way the stage was set for Farooq Abdullah to succeed his father as Chief Minister. And when in 1982 Sheikh Abdullah passed away he had not made any choice for the post of the Chief Minister. And while his body was being shifted to the Polo Grounds it was expected G.M. Shah, would be sworn in as Chief Minister. Shah had expected a call from the Raj Bhawan at any time however, last minute intervention by the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, led to Dr Farooq Abdullah being sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Indira Gandhi had phoned D.D. Thakur, a senior Ministerial colleague of Sheikh Abdullah, and suggested to him that he should take Farooq Abdullah to the Raj Bhawan, late in the evening, where B.K. Nehru, as Governor, administered to him the customary oath. This left G.M. Shah high and dry. And Farooq Abdullah allowed his son, Omar Abdullah to succeed him as Chief Minister. This happened when Omar Abdullah contested successfully the Assembly election in 2008 and with the help of his father Omar was elected as leader of the legislature party of the National Conference and later installed as Chief Minister. And Omar was successful in completing the six-year tenure as he had the support of the Congress with which the NC had formed a coalition Government. And if Mufti Mohd. Sayeed has cast the dice in favour of his daughter one need not feel either enraged or amazed. Possibly the idea of Mufti to allow his daughter to wear the mantle of Chief Ministership has been born in his mind during the 2014 Lok Sabha election when he had given the party ticket to two senior PDP leaders, Muzaffar Hussain Beigh and Tariq Hameed Qarra to contest from Baramulla and Srinagar Lok Sabha constituencies. These two MPs are in the forefront of those who are known to belong to the camp of dissidents. Possibly he had known that these two leaders may create problems for the coronation of Mehbooba as Chief Minister. And Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed has himself admitted that there was a plan to allow Mehbooba to don his mantle. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said on Friday that his daughter and ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti was wise enough to shoulder any responsibility. Replying to a question about media reports that he intended to hand over the reins to his daughter, Sayeed said: "She is mature enough to handle responsibilities. It is a democracy. She works more than I do in addressing problems of the people on the ground." As an astute politician he accepted that the banner of dissension raised by Muzaffar Hussain Beigh and Tariq Hameed Qarra was part of democratic traditions. He said that there was nothing exceptional about the problem of dissension because there is no political party in the state and elsewhere in India which does not have the problem of dissension. He made it clear that whatever may the problem the issue will be discussed with Beigh and Qarra. Hitherto Mufti Sayeed has been able to carry with him all leaders and workers of the PDP and as Chief Minister it is the duty of Mehbooba to carry with her all these party leaders and workers besides the alliance partner of the PDP, the BJP. In fact Mehbooba's performance will be watched not only by people of the state but by the opposition NC and the Congress. As Chief Minister she would have to do a bit of tight rope walking as far as her outbursts on various political issues are concerned. Right now the PDP stands on the cross road and it is for Mehbooba to put the party on the right route so that she is able to ensure all round development. |
