Early Times Report

Rajouri, Nov 14: Health Minister Ch Lal Singh has said that the State Government has taken several initiatives to improve the healthcare facilities in every hospital across the State during last eight months.
However, the people of Rajouri have contested the claim. According to them, almost all the health centres in Rajouri district including district hospital besides running short of life saving drugs, have been facing acute shortage of senior consultants, consultants and Medical Officers on regular side.
Reports reveal that more than 60 to 70 % posts of senior consultants, consultants, assistant surgeons, medical officers including coordinators are lying vacant in all the Sub District Hospitals (SDHs), Community Health Centers (CHCs), Public Health Centres (PHCs) etc in the district.
At present doctors posted under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) project have been running the affairs of health centres in far flung areas but fail to provide proper care and cure to the patients for want of logistics including medicines.
Not to talk of other centres even in the most important district hospital, which is catering to the needs of people from Rajouri, Poonch and Reasi districts, Health Ministry has failed to provide Radiologist ( both the posts are lying vacant) since the CT SCAN unit was installed (about 6 years ago).
The shortage of doctors has created many problems for the poor people inhabitants of remote / far flung areas who can't afford treatment at district hospital or at private clinics/ hospitals.
Not only doctors, all the important medicines including fluids are available in very less quantity and mostly patients/ attendants asked to purchase these medicines from the open market.
In almost all the health centres situated in far flung areas, patients are advised either to go to district hospital at Rajouri or government medical college (GMC) hospital at Jammu.
"Those who can afford treatment at Jammu or at Rajouri are very less in number while most of the patient belong to BPL category take their patients to homes to go for traditional local treatments," said Mohammad Farooq, a social activist from Budhal.
The inhabitants of Kotranka tehsil held a protest demonstration and demanded immediate availability of required / sanctioned strength of doctors in health centres situated in far flung areas and at sub district hospital at Kotranka.
"Not only doctors but the shortage of other staff has also made these centres defunct. Except small quantity of liquid no life saving medicine is available in health centres in Kandi Health Zone including in SDH at Kotranka" said Manzoor Ahmed, Mushtaq Ahmed and other protesters.
Reliable sources said that out of sanctioned 33 posts of Medical Officers (MOs) 27 are vacant in Kandi Medical block .
A senior doctor said, " One of the main reasons behind the shortage of doctors is the sporadic transfers and in most cases doctor either fail to join or after joining duties moves on long leaves".
"Political interference and greed for money are some others factors which force doctors to stay in cities rather to join at far flung areas" said the doctor. While talking to reporters, Dr Chaman Bhasin , CMO said that government has been making arrangements to provide doctor at every health centres.
