'Burning of garbage in open' leaves locals fuming

Mendhar, Feb 16: Residents and environmentalists of region are left fuming over burning of garbage in the open which has been banned by National Green Tribunal's (NGT). National Green Tribunal's (NGT).had banned the "unregulated open burning" of plastic, rubber or other such articles across the country in December 2013.
The locals highlighting the adverse affects of burning of garbage in open said that it is taking toll of environment especially in close vicinity of Shaheed Sampark in the hub of town. According to locals and morning walkers, Safai Karamcharis of RDD frequently burn the garbage containing plastics and polythene in open thereby polluting the local environment. They alleged that this practice often carried out in early hours of the morning near Shaheed Sampark.
They also alleged that reports of burning of garbage and other RDD solid waste are pouring in from other localities of Mendhar town also and the practice is making people to question the role of concerned authorities including nodal agency to take care of environment i.e. the Pollution Control Board District Poonch
"Resentment is brewing among morning walkers and others who come here to exercise, locals said and alleged, "due to this activity of RDD employees they are forced to breathe in polluted air."
While talking to Early Times, a morning walker Vinod Dutta said, "They (morning walkers) have complained the matter with the Deputy Commissioner Poonch and Block Development Officer (BDO) Mendhar also but they still are waiting for authorities to take some concrete initiate in this regard.
