Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 16: Much has been written and is being written on the possibility or no possibility of the PDP-BJP coalition forming the government in J&K. There are elements who assert that the PDP-BJP coalition government would be in place in the state anytime from now. Their view is based on the statements made by certain PDP and BJP leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Beigh and BJP national general secretary and BJP point man Ram Madhav. Both suggested on Monday that the coalition was "intact" and talks between the leadership of the two parties were on behind the curtain.
Beigh made the statement in Jammu and Ram Madhav in Delhi. At the same, however, both the PDP and BJP leaders didn't disclose the problems the two parties were trying to surmount in order to pave way for the government formation in the state.
"Whatever people are saying is already in our thoughts. Some things are confidential, which if revealed before time, may hurt your interests and work done so far. Mehbooba has not set any pe-conditions," Baig told mediapersons in Jammu after attending the 'chehlum' (40 days after death) ceremony of late Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
"We want a time frame for implementation of things already approved in the Agenda of Alliance. We do not want to sit on the chair for the sake of power, but for betterment of people of the state. Party president Mehbooba Mufti has raised some issues with Ram Madhav some time back, but those things were confidential and could not be revealed to the public. We want a timeframe for implementation of things already approved in the Agenda of Alliance. We do not want to sit on the chair for the sake of power, but for betterment of people of the state," he said, and added there were "confidential" things, which "could not be revealed to the public".
As for Ram Madhav, he, inter-alia, said: "Talks are going in a positive direction and the results will be known when those fructify". About Asked "confidence-building measures" demanded by Mehbooba Mufti, Madhav didn't say anything. He evaded a reply and said "he would talk about it later".
But more than that, Ram Madhav denied the reports that he would soon visit Srinagar for a one-on-one meeting with the PDP president. "He had no immediate plan of coming to the state. Will let you know when I come," he said.
The statement of Beigh that "we do not want to sit on the chair for the sake of power, but for betterment of people of the state" and that the government formation would take some time as there were issues which still remained unaddressed and the statement of Madhav that he would not say anything about the demands as put forth by Mehbooba Mufti and that he had no immediate plan to visit Srinagar only suggest that both the parties have still to cover some distance. In other words, both suggested that the possibility of the PDP-BJP coalition assuming power in the state in the near appears quite remote.
Apart from some difference between the two parties, the JNU anti-national incident that has forced the Union Government to act against the seditionists, including SAR Geelani of Kashmir origin, is another very important factor that has adversely impacted the process of government formation in the state. The PDP can't afford to form government in the state at a time when New Delhi has initiated action against SAR Geelani and others who eulogized Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat in Delhi on February 9. If she forms government with the BJP at this point in time, she and her party would further lost the confidence of Kashmiri people.
The bottom line is that though the BJP wants to re-stitch alliance with the BJP at any cost, it is the PDP which is not in hurry for obvious reasons. Mehbooba Mufti had explained her point of view on January 31 at Srinagar and on February 2 in Jammu and Beigh also reiterated the same in Jammu on Monday, when he said that the PDP will not form the government just for the sake of power.
Only a naïve will not understand the meaning of what Beigh said.
