2/16/2016 11:02:13 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 16: A day after National Food Security Act (NFSA) was implemented in Jammu and Kashmir; people at various places including summer capital today staged demonstrations against the government decision terming it as anti-people.
People at Barbar Shah, Abi Guzar Brein and Iqbal Colony areas took to roads and staged massive demonstrations against implementation of NFSA in the state.
The protesters while terming the decision as anti people demanded its immediate role back as the same might become the cause of protracted agitation in Kashmir valley.
Protesters including men women and children amid anti NFSA and anti government slogans sat on a dharna on main road at Barbar Shah area, that severely hampered the traffic movement for over an hour.
"We are poor people we have been witnessing hardships since past twenty six years, now this new act has broken our back. In Kashmir majority of people eat rice twice a day. Government should impose complete ban on rice than providing three kilos ration to per house hold," Dilshada an angry protester said.
Talking to Early Times, Special Secretary to Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department (CAPD), Mohammad Akbar Ganai said that people should cooperate with the government as the act is people friendly and in no way prove anti.
"I fail to understand why people who are well-off needs subsidy from the government, this act I would like to reiterate is meant for poor. How this is this beneficial people will realize that later," said Ganai.
He also claimed that he has been misquoted in the previous news report which is not correct and needs to be rectified, "I didn't say that there is not any criteria set by the government but the ration as per act will be distributed in three categories including AAY, BPL and APL"
He said people who are well-off and who could afford essentials from the market does not fall in any category.
The protesters appealed the Governor to personally intervene in the matter and use his best offices to impress upon the centre either to amend the act or revoke it for the larger poor Kashmiri people.
"We want the government to revoke it or to make amendments in the act, how could a person sustain on three kilograms of rice per month, this protest of ours should serve as an eye opener to the government as we don't want any confrontation but to settle the issue peacefully," Irshad Ahmad Bhat another protester said.
The protesters threatened protracted protests in case the government does not take people's concerns seriously.
"We have been forced to come on roads, Kashmiri people have befooled form time to time, in case the government does not revoke the act or make any amendments we would be forced to go come on roads and the responsibility shall lie on the government," he said.
Joint Director CA&PD said that there are around six lakh odd people who could not get ration from the government.
