Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 16: There is growing public resentment against the illegal mining in Ravi belt in Kathua district as the same is posing a large scale threat to ecology and creating environmental hazards. According to sources hundreds of crushers have been established by people from Punjab in Ravi basin falling under the J&K State with State Government not taking any cognizance to the same. Sources said that there is brewing resentment among the people of Kathua against failure of authorities to check the illegal mining in the river basin and establishment of hundreds crushers in the area. Sources said the mushrooming of the crushers in the Ravi basin by the people from Punjab has become a cause of concern for locals who are facing worst threat to the environment.
The dust of stone crushers has added to the pollution in this entire belt and people of the area have alleged that due to increasing mining in the Ravi basin the ground water level has totally depleted in this entire belt with people raising a hue and cry against the same.
The villagers in Krinda Gandyal and other areas of the Ravi belt alleged that earlier the ground water for tube well was available at 20 feet at the most but now it is not even available over 40 feet. The situation is alarming in the entire belt with people also taking to streets at a number of times against the failure of State Government to check the establishment of crushers by the people from Punjab in the Ravi basin when the land belongs to J&K State.
They also alleged a nexus between the authorities of Geological Mining and the mafia groups in Punjab who have established illegal crushers and were also involved in illegal mining in Ravi basin.
Sources said the crusher business is lucrative for the people of Punjab as the mafia groups besides Punjab supply the stone aggregate in Haryana and Rajasthan states as well as UT of Chandigarh also. Sources said that the Mining officials of the State Government despite the growing public resentment have failed to take the cognizance of the same and act against the land mafia.
The people of Kathua have sought the immediate intervention of Governor N N Vohra and also criticized the so called environmentalists for their failure in taking the cognizance of the same.
