Demand for judicial probe into Pulwama incident justified
2/17/2016 12:01:30 AM
Killing two students in Pulwama area
in south Kashmir on Sunday in the
fire opened by the security forces has evoked sharp reaction from various political parties. If such incidents evoke condemnation there is nothing wrong but those who berate the security forces for eliminating two students and injuring a score of other protesters should try to study the genesis of the problem. It seems that since the rise of Pakistan sponsored insurgency in the Kashmir valley every action has a chain reaction. This means when during protest rallies protesters pelt stones on the security forces one cannot expect the police, the paramilitary forces and the Army to sit silent.Yes,the security forces can adopt soft stance towards the protesters which means they should avoid using lethal weapons against the protesters.. May be that the protesters are trying to provoke the security forces to retaliate which could ultimately result in chain reaction. On occasions people, rather innocent civilians, have been misguided by the vested interest for organizing protest rallies which assume unruly shape thereby forcing the security forces to retaliate.Yes,if the PDP,the Congress and the National Conference have condemned the Pulwama incident these parties are right because politicians have a heart to mourn over the loss of lives.
Have these politicians, who have started condemning the Pulwama incident, ever bothered to jump into the fray for bringing about restraint among the protesters ? These politicians have not done so and among these politicians are included Kashmiri separatists. These politicians, whether they belong to the mainstream camp are from the separatist camp, watch Pulwama type incidents on the sidelines. Those in the opposition camp, including the separatists, remain passive spectators of the ding-dong battle between the protesters and the security forces. Once they come to know that some innocent civilians have been killed and others are injured they are quick to grab the peoples' attention by raising their voices against what they call repression, oppression and state terror. If the PDP Chief, Mehbooba Mufti, Congress Chief, G.A.Mir and senior NC leader, Ali Mohd. Sagar have condemned the pulwama incident they are right because they suspect that the security forces have over reacted. But it is hard to digest when Sagar has said there is no difference between the Governor's rule and that of the BJP-PDP coalition Government. Has he forgotten that during the NC rule, 120 people got killed when the security forces opened fire and fired teargas shells? He should not have because if he has lost power he seems to have a strong memory.
Well Congress Chief, G.A.Mir has stretched the matter to greater length when he blamed the Government of India for the killing of two students in Pulwama incident.Does he mean to say that either Prime Minister, Narendra Modi or the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, ordered the security forces to open fire on the protesters ? If he means so he is totally wrong. Yes, if these politicians have demanded a judicial probe they are justified because a thorough probe would reveal what prompted the security forces to open fire on the protesters. Not only this if a thorough probe is ordered it is expected that the reason behind organizing protest rallies would be known. It is important because reports indicate that people were protesting against the encounter between the militants and the security forces in the nearby area in Pulwama. If these reports are true, it means that people had no justification for organizing the protest rallies. Secondly, a new trend has emerged in the Kashmir valley. People are forced or goaded to hold protest rallies even on the killing of militants and the protesters justify their anger by terming the slain militant as a local citizen who had no involvement in militancy. Another trend is that when slain militants are taken for burial large number of people participate in the burial ceremony and at times groups of participants shout anti-Government slogans and clash with the security forces. Hence it is a vicious circle operating in the Kashmir valley where people should not distinguish a local militant from a foreign mercenary or good militants from a bad militants as there can never be bad or good terrorism. Terrorism is nothing short of carrying out terror attacks and all such attacks should be condemned.
