srinagar, Mar 14: The School of Designs working under the Department of Handcrafts is contemplating to open a full-fledged craft centre at Pakharpora in Budgam district so that the girls of this village and the adjacent ones showcase their products before the tourists who visit the place. This was disclosed by Amina Asad, Chief Designer, School of Designs, during her visit to the Pakharpora village. She was invited to the village by National Welfare Forum (NWF) an NGO to share her valuable expertise to the girls who are attending a course being conducted by the NGO. Under the one month training course that started on February 22, latest skills in the field of craft especially willow work are being taught to the girls at the Pakharpora village. Around 55-60 girls are taking part in the programme that is expected to go a long way in promotion of the products as and when the tourists visit them. During her visit Amina was very much impressed with the work of the girls and she hailed them for their dedication while learning tricks of the trade during the training programme. She interacted with the trainees and expressed her satisfaction over the progress of the training being imparted to the girls. In her address, the Chief Designer said that a craft centre would be established in the Pakharpora so that more and more girls come forward and display their skills as well as talent in the field of craft. She said that one month training programme is not enough and there is need for advanced training in this regard. "The talent is hidden among the girls of the rural areas and it needs to be exposed to the outside world. As such the training programmes like the one being carried out here are very important. But at the same time it is important that advanced training is given to the girls and I assure you that such training would be given at the School of Designs," said Amina. Gowhar Wani, Director (NWF) said the trainees are evincing keen interest in the willow work and other related crafts. He said once the students are trained then they will be able to come up with their own products and display the same to tourists who visit Pakharpora and other tourist important villages like Yusmarg and Charar-I-Sharief. "During this training programme the trainees are being imparted latest techniques in the field of crafts especially willow work. The aim and purpose of the training programme is to make the girls self-reliant so that they give proper fillip to their hidden talent. Experts are providing tips to the trainees in order to equip them with latest techniques," said Director NWF. The training programme is being organized by NWF in collaboration with Tourism Department working to promote Rural Tourism in the state. The training programme is also being carried out in collaboration with Crafts Museum, School of Designs, Department of Handicrafts. |
