'97% BJP workers want Article 370 to be abrogated'
3/14/2016 11:36:59 PM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 14: Last Saturday, Public Opinion Forum (POF) organized seminar at the Jammu Press Club on the theme "Understanding Article 370". It was well-attended event. Those who spoke on Article 370 included three former Jammu University Professors (Hari Om, SK Sharma and Virender Gupta), former member of J&K Public Service Commission (KB Jandial) and a business leader (Anil Suri). The event got good coverage.
The general consensus was that Article 370 had, instead of benefiting the State and the people, only created complications and added to the woes of all sections of society and that it was time to do away with it. It was also asserted by one and all that the accession of the State with India was final and irrevocable and those who termed this Article a "bridge between the State and the rest of the country" simply represented a vested interest and those wanted to get J&K out of India in the name of religion.
However, one very important revelation that escaped the notice of the otherwise very alert media was the one made by Vijay Sethi, who heads the senior citizens' cell of the J&K BJP, and the response it evoked from one of the speakers. The moment the speakers finished the job assigned to them by the organizers of the seminar, Sethi insisted that he wanted to make a revelation, which he did make. He said 97 per cent grassroots level workers and members of the BJP wanted Article 370 to be thrown out lock, stock and barrel.
"During the BJP's mass contact programme, the BJP ascertained the views of the grassroots level BJP workers and supporters. 97 per cent of them urged the party leadership in writing to abrogate Article 370," he said and what he said was commended by all those present in the seminar. Besides, one of the main speakers asked Sethi if the party high command had appreciated the sentiment of those 97 per cent grassroots level members and workers, his response was: "The party knew it".
What Sethi said was indeed a true revelation. But the question to be asked is: Will the BJP, which is in power at the Centre and has a massive mandate behind it, take steps to ensure the abrogation of Article 370? If one goes by the agenda of alliance on the basis of which the BJP became part of the J&K Government, then the answer would be a big no. The reason is that the agenda of alliance provided for a dispensation beyond Article 370.
