Kashmir hills get more snow, rains lash plains | | | Javaid Naikoo

Srinagar, Mar 14: Snowfall continued for second consecutive day in upper reaches of Kashmir including the tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Sonmarg, Ahrabal and Mughal road areas while plains recorded rainfall. Gulmarg received fresh 10 inches of snow and Sonamarg eight inches while upper reaches of Mughal road including Zaznar and Peer-Ki-Gali and mountainous peaks of Aharbal received around 12 inches of snow. Reports received from Ladakh said that Fresh snowfall was also recorded in in various mountainous areas of Ladakh division including Zanskar area. In plains of Kashmir bright sunshine of Monday Morning was darkened by clouds in afternoon as intermittent rain was recorded in various parts and according to MeT officials another western disturbance is likely to hit the state from March 16, due to which the weather will generally remain wet for nearly a week. Weather experts describe the much talked term in Jammu and Kashmir, "western disturbances" as "a tropical storm witnessed in the Mediterranean Sea that causes widespread rain in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh." MeT officials said that from today to March 16, the weather will remain by and large dry, which would be followed by isolated rainfall on March 17 and on March 18 and March 19, there will be widespread rainfall in many places across the state followed by scattered rainfall on March 20. The water level as per the readings of irrigation and flood control department in river Jhelum was recorded at Sangam with 5.30 ft, Ram Munshi Bagh 8.75 and Asham 5.50 when this report was filed. Following intermittent rains in plains and snowfall in upper reaches of Kashmir,Kahsmir division as per MeT reports are predicted to experience a maximum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, which is five degrees below normal with the minimum temperature settling around 4.6 degrees Celsius, one notch above normal temperature. The all important Jammu-Srinagar highway was reopened by authorities on Monday for light vehicular traffic movement after remaining closed for two days due to landslides triggered by incessant rains in Ramban area. According to Reports authorities allowed light vehicles to move from both Jammu and Srinagar on Monday morning after barriers were cleared from road at many places,however people travelling on road have been asked to confirm about the condition of road before planning to travel on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway after fresh snowfall in upper reaches of Kashmir and rains in plains, the highway remained closed. |
