Landslides in PoK force closure of Uri-Muzaffarabad bus, goods service | | | S Tahir-ul Haq
Early Times Report BARAMULLA, Mar 14: Authorities have suspended both the passenger traffic and movement of goods vehicles on Uri-Muzaffarabad road due to landslides at many places on the other side of Line of Control (LoC). A senior police official said that the passenger bus service 'Karvan-e-Aman' and goods carrying service were suspended to avoid accidents due to non-motorable road. The transport service is likely to resume on Wednesday if rains stop. "During the intervening night of March 13-14 landslides have occurred at five places between Chakoti and Kohala road length. The weekly cross-LoC bus will not operate because of landslides on Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) side," the official said. The official said that from Srinagar to Aman Setu, on this side of the LoC in Uri sector, the road was clear. However information was received from PoK authorities that landslides have occurred at many places, he said. Later, it was agreed from both sides to cancel the bus service and accordingly all those who were scheduled to travel in the bus have been informed. The cross-LoC service has helped thousands of families, separated due to partition in 1947, to meet each other since the first bus was flagged on May 7, 2005 after India and Pakistan authorities agreed to allow travel of state subjects from both sides on " Travel Permits" instead of International passports. Meanwhile, reports said that more than 60 livestock died after a Kotha (Mud House) collapsed due to rains in Limber village of Boniyar area in Baramulla district today. The livestock belonged to Mohammad Sikander Khan, Mohammad Ashraf Khan, Abdul Aziz Khan and Abdul Rashid Khan, while as a residential house also got damaged in village Batgran Uri near Line of Control (LoC) due to landslides. |
