Cab drivers protest, block road | | | MS NAZKI Early Times Report
pOONCH, Mar 14: Tata Sumo drivers today staged a protest against the district administration and blocked Mendhar-Jammu road for nearly two hours. The protest were led by Tata Sumo Drivers Union president Kafeel Ahmed Khan who said, "The main bazar of Mendhar has become a garbage site and authorities are not taking any interest in clearing it." He said Rural Development Department had miserably failed to maintain cleanliness in the town and its peripheries. The protesters said annual maintenance funds of Rs 20 to Rs 30 were being charged from every vehicle daily, but this money was not being spent to maintain cleanliness. The condition of Bus Stand, Mendhar, was worst due to the dumping of garbage. They were later joined by Beopar Mandal Committee of Mendhar which RDD for its lackadaisical approach towards the Mendhar town in terms of making it clean, sources said. They also alleged that the annual maintenance contract was being given to the blue-eyed person. Naib-Tehsildar Aftab Hussain along with SHO Afzal Mir reached the spot and pacified the protestors. They assured that their genuine demand would be put before the authorities concerned. SDPO Thakur Sher Singh also assured them that their demands would be put before the ACD and the DDC, Poonch, and an inquiry would be initiated against those who had dumped garbage in the main town and bus stand area. |
