srinagar, Mar 14: Taking forward its campaign to bring in transparency and accountability in working system of a public authority, the Jammu & Kashmir Right to Information (J&K RTI) Movement (J&K RTIM) in collaboration with Common Wealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) organized a one-day training workshop on RTI Act, 2009 at Tangmarg. Hundreds of people including social activists, retired bureaucrats, teachers and students attended the workshop.
"Under Section 23 of J&K RTI Act, 2009, the state government is duty bound to conduct awareness programs for general public. As the state government has failed to conduct the awareness programs, the CHRI and J&K RTIM have been conducting awareness programs across Jammu and Kashmir," said Dr. Shaikh Ghulam Rasool, Chairman J&K RTIM. Dr. Ghulam Rasool said that in March eight awareness programs would be organized as part of RTI week. He said the idea behind conducting the workshop in Tangmarg was to train and aware people about getting access to official information on forest land, which has been encroached by the hoteliers and other organized land mafia in Tangmarg and Gulmarg areas. The J&K RTIM Chairman emphasized that RTI is the best tool to bring in transparency in the public authorities and make government accountable to the people. He appealed Governor N N Vohra to take steps to fill the post of Chief Information Commissioner and Information Commissioner of the State Information Commission which have become vacant recently. "The achievements made by the SIC should not go waste and the Governor should initiate the process to fill the vacant posts of the SIC," said Dr. Ghulam Rasool.Others who spoke on the occasion include District Coordinator, Sheikh Irshad, Advocate Syed Mujtaba, Abdul Majeed and Engineer Irfan Banka. During the training programme the participants were trained to write RTI applications and get information from various government departments.
