Welfare Schemes for poor girls: DB directs all DSWOs to appear before it | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 14: A Division Bench of J&K High Court comprising Justice M H Attar and Justice B S Walia has ordered all District Social Welfare Officers (DSWOs) to appear before after observing that majority of them have not understood the true spirit and purport of the 'SMAS and HUNNAR' scheme for poor girls,. "It appears that these District Social Welfare Officers have not understood the true spirit and purport of the SMAS and HUNNAR, the court added. In order to ensure that these schemes are implemented in letter and spirit on the ground level, it is deemed appropriate to direct all the District Social Welfare Officers across the state to appear before the Court on next date," said Division Bench and it posted the case for further consideration on week following the next. Under SMAS, an eligible girl beneficiary will be entitled to get one time financial assistance of Rs 25000 and five grams of gold while Hunnar is a skill development programme for the girls living below poverty line. The Division Bench also said that the issue about the amendments to be made in the corruption laws could not he considered today because of non availability of Advocate General and announced to take up the same next week. Court passed the directions in a PIL titled Muhammad Amin Beigh v/s State and others. Meanwhile District Magistrate Srinagar had slapped detention order under Public Safety Act (PSA) on Beigh for allegedly exploiting girls under the garb of providing them jobs. Beigh had challenged the order in the High Court. The Court dismissed his plea and subsequently passed series of directions to the government asking it to take steps to ensure rehabilitation of poor girls in the State. |
