NFSA amendment may haunt new government | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 27: Amending the recently implemented National Food Security Act (NFSA) which has generated lot of public resentment in the state soon will be a big challenge for the new coalition government. Though State Government has already increased the quota from five Kg to seven Kgs per head after people registered protest, the majority section of the people still want its replacement and issuance of ration as per old scale saying that the ration to be issued as per new scale could not suffice a person to feed himself. Besides the people have outrightly rejected supply of wheat and demanded that the consumers be issued flour instead as they can't go to a mill for grinding the same. With resentment against the Act increasing every day, the new government may find itself in a difficult situation. Perturbed over public resentment the PDP-BJP coalition partners who were brain behind implementation of the Act in the state also joined the public in demanding revocation of the Act. The former Consumer Affairs Minster Ch Zulfkar and Deputy Chief Minister publicly came in support of peoples, demand and stressed on making certain amendments in the Act. As the two parties are again going to form the Government in coalition by next week it is bounden duty on them to look into the matter and review the issue again to enforce some amendments in the Act so that it can fulfill the aspirations of the masses. After themselves joining their voice with the people demanding revocation of the Act both PDP and BJP after assuming office will have no option but to amend the Act for the larger interests of the people of all the three regions of the State. Any delay by coalition partners in this regard will otherwise put a question mark on their sincerity and also this will tarnish their image in public too. The people are hopeful that remaining out of power for last over two months the leaders of the two parties have realized the problems of the people in the State faced by them especially after the implementation of NFSA. Instead of doing any good to consumers it ahs added to their worries with the result the same was totally rejected by them. |
