Mehbooba debunks Madhav's claim, says BJP's support to PDP unconditional | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 27: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti flew to New Delhi on March 17 and met with BJP president Amit Shah to discuss the issue of government formation in the state. She met him on the same day in the evening and returned to Srinagar the next day. Neither the PDP nor the BJP issued any statement on the outcome of the talks. It was BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav who on March 18 evening told reporters in New Delhi that "the BJP had not accepted any of the PDP's new conditions" and that it was for the PDP president to take the initiative for the government formation by getting herself elected as leader of the PDP Legislature Party. The same day credible reports emanated from Srinagar and one of the reports quoting PDP sources said that "it's all over". The general view of the local BJP leadership was also the same. Things changed dramatically on March 23. Mehbooba suddenly went to New Delhi and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi the next morning at the latter's official residence. After the meeting, Mehbooba Mufti told reporters that she was quite satisfied with the outcome of the meeting and that she would discuss the whole issue of government formation with the PDP legislature party at Srinagar on March 24. The meeting did take place and she was not only elected as Leader of PDP Legislature Party but also declared her the chief ministerial candidate. In between Ram Madhav again made a statement that "neither Mehbooba Mufti put any new demand nor anything was committed by the Prime Minister" and that "the Prime Minister told her that she should discuss the issue of government formation with the BJP leadership". He said so twice and his statement obviously caused confusion with many in the state suggesting that nothing tangible had happened during her meeting with the Prime Minister. Mehbooba Mufti didn't react. The PDP president spoke only in Jammu on Saturday after meeting with Governor NN Vohra. After staking claim to government formation, along with Leader of BJP Legislature Party Nirmal Singh, she told media persons outside Raj Bhawan that the BJP had extended unconditional support to the PDP for the formation of the coalition government. "I am thankful to BJP leadership for extending unconditional support to PDP and promising to implement Agenda of Alliance forged by my late father with that party," she said, adding that "I am very happy that reiteration of Agenda of Alliance has taken place between this and that side during past two and a half months". She further added: "I am very happy about it because Mufti Sahib had forged this alliance for a larger purpose than just for the formation of the Government". All this should clear the confusion and establish that the Prime Minister had given her categorical assurance that the Union Government and the BJP will help her to implement her father's vision and agenda. It should also establish that Ram Madhav's was not speaking the truth. |
