Encroachers on prowl near Tawi bund | No demarcation of reclaimed land | | Arun Singh
Early Times Report
Jammu, June 1: Due to negligence of district administration for not demarcating hundreds of kanal of land which was reclaimed by erecting flood protection bund in Tawi at Shidhra near Golf Course, the encroachment goes on unabated. Sources told Early Times that Irrigation and Flood Control Department had started work of flood protection bund over 3 kilometers long in Tawi River plains at Shidhra in 2010-11, resulting reclaiming many acres of land along the left bank of River Tawi at a place where the width of the river was vast. "With the construction of the embankment further ahead of the Golf Course in the bed of River Tawi, the encroachers are further emboldened and encroachment activity, besides Sidhra, has picked up pace even in Majeen and Rangura areas of Bahu rakh and in the newly reclaimed land as well. Again the district administration and the JDA did make efforts to remove encroachments but have not managed to succeed in their efforts," they alleged. They further informed that after reclamation of land only the Tourism & Culture Department had approached for transfer of a portion of the reclaimed land where they intend to construct huts for the golfers and tourists. However, the issue is pending as the Revenue authorities have so far not been able to demarcate the boundaries of land owned by I&FC Department, the Forest Department and the private parties. "Most of these structures which are coming up in the reclaimed land are pacca in nature and illegal encroachment into the flood zone of River Tawi," they alleged further adding that the encroachers mainly comprise of tribal communities which migrate with their herd of animals to higher reaches during summers. |
