BJP MLC inaugurates repaired transformer in Anantnag

Early Times Report

Anantnag, Nov 12: BJP MLC Sofi Yousuf on Wednesday inaugurated a repaired transformer in this south Kashmir district, surprising one and all.
Sofi turned up at his native village Srigufwara along with some party workers for a meeting. However, the legislator stunned everyone in the village after he asked his workers to fix ribbon around the transformer that was installed by the Power Development Department.
Once ribbon and flags of BJP were fixed around the 250 KV transformer transformer, Sofi inaugurated it in presence of senior officials who probably were summoned by the legislator for a different cause.
Sources said that a managed media interaction at the spot also marked the ‘inaugural function’ and helped the legislator in giving an impression to locals that transformer got installed due to his efforts which otherwise is an outcome of routine departmental exercise.
“I have never in my life witnessed any legislator inaugurating the transformer. It was acceptable if the area was getting electricity for the first time,” Aashiq Hussain, a student from Srigufwara told Early Times.
Sofi also took to Facebook and posted photographs of the event with a brief statement, saying installation of the 250 KV transformer was long pending demand of the area.
“Older transformer was faulty and due to which electric appliances used to get damaged. So 250 KV was transformer was installed today for providing a relief to people of Srigufwara,” Sofi wrote, inviting mixed reactions from Facebook users. Bilal Ahmad reacted to Sofi’s post saying “Obama ko lana tha inauguration k leyeh. (You should have invited Obama for inauguration.” A senior PDD official pleading anonymity said that it was not an official function. “Srigufwara is electrified area and due to overloading by the consumers installed transformer was developing technical snags but now we have installed the transformer having higher capacity,” he said. Chief Engineer Power Development Department and Sofi were not available for comment.
Pertinently, Minister for Forest, Environment & Ecology and Social Welfare, Bali Bhagat inaugurated a transformer in Mohalla Verma Barnai in Jammu this September.
