His kin runs school on State land worth crores
Senior politician's name figures in land grab

Early Times Report
srinagar, Nov 12: A senior politician has landed in trouble following revelations that his family has encroached upon over 50 kanals of prime land worth crores of rupees at Humhama on the outskirts of Srinagar and is running a leading school there.
The issue came to fore earlier this week when land brokers started altercation over a piece of land adjacent to the private school. One group of brokers had to sell off two kanals of land to a private party but another land broker claimed proprietary rights over the land which was supposed to be the road link to the land being sold.
This led to heated arguments between the groups of land brokers, who on failing to reach a consensus, rushed to the local patwari to verify revenue records. "The records clearly showed that both, the piece of land, which was being sold, and the one which was being shown as road, were Kahcharai land, which happens to be Government property and cannot be sold under any circumstances," said a source privy to the development.
But as the two parties declined to retreat from their stands, the matter was put before the office of Additional Development Commissioner Budgam. Insiders said some senior officials, well-versed with the revenue records, started scrutiny of the documents only to discover that the entire stretch of over 200 kanals in the area, including the private school run by the political family, was Kahcharai land.
The moment the officials disclosed that the entire land in the said area was Government property, the people representing the land brokers shouted that if they can't get the land, the school run by the politician's family should also be bulldozed.
Insiders said the land brokers started shouting that the land on which the school has been constructed was a Government land and thus must be taken back by the Government or that they would take to streets. Sources said the District Commissioner Budgam was instantly informed about the controversy.
He is understood to have assured the aggrieved parties that the matter would be probed. But till now there is no confirmation of official orders of inquiry having being issued by the Government.
A senior official in know of the matter confirmed to Early Times that "prima facie, it appears that the school has been constructed on Kahcharai land. It's a typical case of land grab."
Officials said the politician, who in the past has remained a Union Government Minister must have grabbed the land when he was in power. "There are many complaints that he had good relations with revenue people when he was MP and Union Minister. It seems to be misuse of position," said a senior official in the administration.
The school was constructed around a decade ago, and before that the said piece of land "had no constructions, not even proper concrete walling."
When contacted a senior official in the DC office Budgam admitted that the complaint has come to their notice. "There was a feud between parties which led us to discover that even the private school is on Government land. We are trying to probe the case as orders in this regard are awaited from the superiors," the official told Early Times.
