Rajouri Nov 12: Tension got gripped in outskirts of Rajouri town when security agencies foiled a bovie smuggling bid and locals staged protest while blocking the Rajouri-poonch Highway here today.
Later hectic efforts from police and district administration diffused the tension and normal traffic was resumed after hours together this afternoon.
Despite several measures taken by the Rajouri police to stop bovine smuggling in the district, bovine smugglers have opted new modus oprendii to avoid police nakas by modifying a passenger vehicle (Tempo Traveler) to smuggle animals t Kashmir valley.
Police sources said, “Yet in another similar bid of bovine smuggling the attempt was foiled by alert army personnel of Road Opening Party (ROP) today near village Narian under Nowshera police station with the rescue of four cows and a bull from the clutches of the smuggler who were carrying the animals in a specially designed Tempo Traveler after giving tranquillizer (sedative drug and were fixed between the seats in inhumane conditions.”
They said that a Tempo Traveler bearing regd no JK02AP-1157 when reached near Narian village on Jammu-Poonch highway early this morning at about 8 am and the troops of ROP party signaled driver to stop the vehicle.
“But instead stopping the vehicle, the driver attempted to escape by speeding vehicle but it developed a technical snag while crossing the speed breaker, they said, further adding, “Army personnel apprehending foul play chased the vehicle along with locals and vehicle abandoned from which they found the sedated animals tied in the specially prepared space between the seats,” they added.
Local and army personnel rescued the sedated animals from vehicle and also called veterinary doctor immediately.
Local BJP, VHP and Bajrang Dal leaders were informed and they also reached the spot and held protest demonstration against district administration/police and blocked Jammu-Poonch highway.
On getting information Ravinder Raina, MLA, Nowshera, Sat Pal Sharma , Ranjeet Tara, Karan Thakur VHP and Bajrang Dal district office holders from Rajouri also reached Narian and joined the protest demonstration,
Meantime Shabir Ahmed Bhat, Deputy Commissioner along with Tajinder Singh, ASP and Hamid Chowdhary, Deputy SP HQs also rushed to the spot and pacified the protestors assuring the due action against accused.
Deputy Commissioner after detailed discussion with the MLA, Ravinder Raina, directed ARTO to cancel the permit of the Tempo Traveler and also placed under suspension all the in-charge of police nakas from Sunderbani to Narian including at Lamberi and Thalka under the jurisdiction of Nowshera police station.
Besides this, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the supervision of SSP and headed by Saheen Mirza, SDPO Manjakot zone too has been constituted and was directed to submit its report within 15 days.
