ET staffer harassed, humiliated for spotting beard | | | Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, Nov 12: Early Times staffer Syed Junaid Hashmi was humiliated and harassed in full public view by Udhampur police purely for spotting a beard. According to copy of the complaint that he has submitted to Deputy Commissioner (DC) Udhampur Shahid Iqbal, Early Times staffer was stopped outside the gate of his relatives and asked irrelevant questions. He was surrounded by a police while SHO Udhampur Arjun Singh asked him about reasons for having coming to Udhampur on the eve of Diwali. Singh asked for I-Card and when the ET staffer produced the driving license, he was straightway told that driving license is not the identity card. The SHO further said “This is a sensitive place and today is Diwali, what you are doing here?. According to the ET staffer, the SHO was behaving as if a dreaded terrorist had been caught. When the ET staffer firmly told Singh that he had produced the identity card and there was no need to show him another one, his response was both humiliating and abusive. “Daari rakhtey ho, to i-card bhi rakh liya karo (If you keep beard, keep I-card also),” were the words that shocked the Journalist. ET staffer rang up SSP Udhampur Suleiman Choudhary, SSP Udhampur briefing him about the incident and seeking his intervention. The incident deserved a public apology from the police officer but since the norm has been, police never apologises but cooks up a story to ensure they are not hold accountable for their acts of omission and commission. ET staffer has approached the district administration and sought strict action against this officer .When the last reports came in, district administration had not taken any action against the said police officer.
