Most of power projects of State Govt lying defunct | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 16: Notwithstanding the demand of State Government regarding return of power projects from NHPC, it has so far failed to construct its own power projects for decades together. According to sources various power projects which are lying under the control of the State Government are defunct at present for years tighter and they included eight MW Sewa Hydel Project in Basohli which is not functioning for last over three years after a breach in a portion of canal near power house. Crores of rupees spent on the project have gone waste as it failed to generate the power, sources said, adding on stones throw of this micro hydel project is the NHPC (a Government of India undertaking) Sewa Hydel Project which generates over 100 mw of power and is in better condition. The project is on high altitude than Sewa Hydel project which has been constructed by State Government. Not only the Sewa Hydel Project but one units of the 105 mw Upper Sindh Hydel Project Stage IInd is also defunct for a decade now after a breach in Wangath link canal and this unit has not been restored till date.Same is the case with Chenani Hydel Project as well as Ganderbal Hydel Project. Sources said that Ganderbal Hydel Project was to be upgraded and though the work has been started over a decade back it is going on snail's pace. The authorities over the decade have failed to call tenders and allot the works. The people of the area have expressed their lot of concern over the delaying tactics of the Government regarding the construction of the project. Since the work was started on the project it could have been commissioned over five years back but the project is yet in the tendering stage and this delay has also added to the cost escalation, sources added. Sources said the Parnai Hydel project in Poonch has not been completed though the work has been started on it over two decades back while work on much talked about Rattle Project in Kishtwar district has also been abandoned by the constructing company which fled after seeking loan from the Government making the State Government totally helpless in taking action against the firm. Sources said the incapability of the State Government can be gauged from the fact that it has failed to act against the company by re-tendering the work though the company has abandoned the same over a year back. The delay in construction has also resulted into cast escalation. Ridiculing the State Government for demanding the power projects back from NHPC sources said that it should first complete those projects which are already under its control and better their condition instead of seeking projects back from NHPC. |
