Mass contact programme: BJP has nothing to tell people of Jammu | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 16: The J&K unit of BJP, which before the formation of PDP-BJP coalition Government was known primarily for holding press conferences at regular intervals and issuing statements of political importance as well as on issues facing people of Jammu province to remain in the news, has finally decided to organize what it calls "Mass Contact Programme" across the State. The BJP is now more a party with support-base in Jammu only. It has its some support-base created in Ladakh as well and being a part of the coalition Government, it has also a few members in the Valley for obvious reasons. The stated objective of the BJP is to educate public opinion about the "achievements" of PDP-BJP coalition Government during the last nine months. During the Mass Contact Programme, the BJP Ministers, MLAs, MLCs and party functionaries will tell the people that the party made sincere attempts to "fulfill election promises" and the BJP delivered its promise by handing down a transparent and corruption-free administration and handing down a Government to the people that functioned well and discharged its obligations towards the people of the State. The BJP, which has been disowned by the people of Jammu province for all practical purposes, has nothing in its record book to show, tell and boast of. It may impress the people of Kashmir by telling them that the BJP high command gave a preferential treatment to Kashmir and handed over everything to the Valley, but it cannot take that line in Jammu, where the people know that it was for the first time in 68 years that Jammu province was excluded from the State Cabinet, that Jammu province denied even that share which it used to have before the earlier regimes, that the BJP helped the Valley to further consolidate its control over everything, over almost all the departments, over almost all social and financial institutions and over such vital recruitment agencies as Public Service Commission. There is nothing that the BJP left for the people of Jammu province. The fact of the matter is that almost all the people of Jammu province have distanced themselves from the BJP. The very fact that the BJP headquarter in Jammu bears a deserted look only indicates the level of the party's unpopularity. Even senior party leaders say that "people do not visit the party headquarters as they know that the BJP has nothing to offer to them or to mitigate their hardships". They say that the "BJP has lost its sheen and appeal not only because of its utter failure to deliver on any front but also because of its faulty policies towards Jammu & Kashmir and Pakistan and its association with a party that the people do not appreciate. The level of its unpopularity could also be gauged from the fact that during the past nine months, the people of Jammu province observed bandh for eight long days, organized three massive rallies and held dharna for almost two months against the BJP. No one trusts the BJP leadership and its words. Such is the situation. Insiders say that "the BJP took decision to start Mass Contact Programme only after the State Government announced that it would hold panchayat and urban local bodies' elections". "The BJP leadership knows that things are not bright for the party owing to its failure to fulfill even a single election promise," the sources said adding "that's the reason the BJP has planned Mass Contact Programme as a last-ditch effort to win over the estranged people of the province". It will be seen if its new move will help it or not help it. The ground situation, however, suggests that the popularity graph of the BJP is declining very fast in Jammu region from where it won 25 seats in the Assembly elections. |
