Sports Policy, improved incentives on cards: Ansari | National Games medallists get over Rs 8 lakh cash prizes | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 16: With eye on the special Central assistance of Rs 200 crores, the State Government contemplates to form a comprehensive sports policy to give fillip to the sports amidst improved incentives to those talented athletes excelling at the national and international level from trouble torn Jammu and Kashmir. This was disclosed by Minister for Sports, Imran Raza Ansari at a function, organised by the J&K State Sports Council to felicitate those 34th and 35th National Games medal winners with cash prizes. Making a dig at the previous National Conference-Congress Government for showing lack of interest, Minister assured the gathering of mostly sportspersons and representatives of sports associations of renewed efforts to rejuvenate sports in this part of the country. "We are in the making of a comprehensive sports policy in the state to give impetus to the sports. To further encourage those talented sportspersons, the Ministry has forwarded the recommendations of the State Sports Council for improved incentives for the sports achievers," said Sports Minster while speaking at the function. The Sports Council has projected Rs five lakh, Rs three lakh and Rs two lakh for gold, silver and bronze medals respectively won in the National Games. The Sports Council has in the recent past doubled these cash prizes to Rs 51,000, Rs 31,000 and Rs 21,000. Earlier, the Minister presented cash prizes worth Rs 8,06,000 lacs to 38 sports achievers in the twin National Games, including seven coaches. Half of this prize money, Rs 4,79,000, was awarded to those seven medal winners in Rythemic Gymnastics alone. The highest prize money of Rs 1,48,000 lacs was given away to Rythemic Gymnast, Palak Kour while Mitali got Rs 1,33,000 lacs in the same discipline. Other medal winners were in the discipline of Boxing (4+1), Weightlifting (1+1), Kayaking and Canoeing (11+2), Wushu (4+1) and Fencing (5+1). The special function was also attended by Additional Director General of J&K Armed Police, S M Sahai, Director General, Department of Youth Services and Sports, Jahangir Mir, Joint Secretaries of State Sports Council, Shiv Kumar Sharma and Zamir Thakur. Earlier, Secretary, State Sports Council, Jawaid Shah welcomed the Minister and other distinguished gathering while vote of thanks presented by member Sports Council, Ranjit Kalra. |
