Let Pakistan stop weaving tales of fiction | | | Well will Islamabad in general and Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, in particular succumb to the pressure mounted by Washington to initiate action against the perpetrators of Pathankot airbase strike? Or will Pakistan ignore the US warning on one pretext or the other as Nawaz Sharif continues to be a servant and not the boss of the Army in Pakistan? These are the basic questions that have become subjects of debate in political and public circles round the globe. Peoples' and politicians' interest in the issue is the result of growing threat of Pakistan and the terrorists who were being nurtured by Islamabad to peace in south Asian region. During the last one year Washington in general and Barack Obama in particular have remained appreciative of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who has, on various occasions bid good bye to the protocol while trying to get in touch with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif. The idea behind these meetings was to encourage Islamabad to opt for the process of dialogue after ending terror within Pakistan. And till date Modi has made it clear to Pakistan that terror and talks cannot coexist and Islamabad has to stop using the soil of Pakistan for exporting terror. And despite criticism from the opposition, especially the Congress, Modi has moved a mile and expects Islamabad to follow suit so that the process of sustained dialogue was initiated. It was expected, as some within the BJP and the Congress feel, that had not Modi paid a trip to Pakistan to meet Nawaz Sharif and greet his family members the Pathankot incident would have not happened. But these critics with the BJP and the Congress should know that terrorists and their handlers were making elaborate preparations for carrying out a terror strike on the Pathankot airbase with the purpose of destroying fighter planes, helicopters and other sophisticated weapons and gadgets. Though seven Indian security personnel had lost their lives while fighting the Pakistan trained terrorists they succeeded in securing safety to the fighter planes, helicopters and other sophisticated equipments and gadgets. Now that after the Pathankot incident the India-Pakistan relations have touched a new low Washington has decided to intervene so that there is no delay in the proposed foreign secretary level talks.Indications are that the talks may not be rescheduled because the hint dropped by Sartaj Aziz, who is close confident of Nawaz Sharif. Soon after India submitted proof the Pakistan's involvement in the Pathankot incident Washington has urged Islamabad to hasten a probe. TheUS Secretary of State John Kerry has told Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to investigate the recent terror attack on an airbase in Pathankot on Sunday. Kerry and Nawaz Sharif discussed a range of bilateral issues of importance to our relationship and the need to stay focused on the pressing challenge of terrorism in the region," State Department spokesman John Kirby said. He was responding to questions on the telephonic conversation between Kerry and Sharif. This is the highest level talk between the leaders of the two countries in the aftermath of the terrorist attack at the Pathankot air force base on January 2 by six Pakistani terrorists. A statement issued by the Pakistan PMO in Islamabad said that "Kerry extended full support to the Prime Minister to find out the truth in the Pathankot terror incident." Pakistan is said to be swiftly carrying out investigations in a transparent manner and will bring out the truth. The world will see Islamabad's effectiveness and sincerity in this regard, Kerry's call to Sharif came amid Indian intelligence reports suggesting that groups and people in Pakistan planned and executed the strike on the Pathankot air force base. India claims it has provided "specific and actionable information in this regard" to Pakistan, but the latter seeks "concrete evidence" from India instead of leads suggesting the attack was planned and directed from its soil. It is now upto Pakistan to stop weaving tales of fiction and punish those involved in the attack. |
