Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 11: With lot being read between the lines over the visit of Sonia Gandhi to Kashmir to condole the death of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed especially in the back drop of the political uncertainty that the state has been pushed into following the incident, insiders divulge that much more is being cooked in the political kitchen then is being smelled.
Sources within the PDP divulge that the party was unhappy with the feelers of political bargaining that the BJP reportedly started immediately after the demise of Mufti, seeking powers to the Dy Chief Minister, more say in the administration and even Chief Minister's chair for three years, which was against the understanding reached between the coalition partners in the agenda of alliance. "At a time when the PDP lost its tallest leader and the sitting Chief Minister, there was talk of greater share in the governance within the BJP" said a senior PDP leader. "This has not augured well with the PDP leadership" he added. Sources also divulge that the PDP wanted the Prime Minister to attend the funeral of the departed leader. "He was the sitting chief minister and unarguably the tallest leader in the state. Prime minister's presence at the funeral would have been symbolic and highly appreciated" said another senior leader of the party. "I remember when Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah expired, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and President Giani Zali Singh had flown to Kashmir to be present at the funeral" he added. Pertinently, the union government was represented by Minister for Home Rajnath Singh at the funeral of Mufti Sayeed, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi had turned up at the Palam Airport and paid his homage to the departed soul before his body was flown to his native village in Bijbehara. Political watchers maintain that with uncertainty over the status of coalition government and the state under brief spell of Governor's rule for the time being, it would not be out of imagination that both PDP and BJP would be weighing their option outside the coalition. "Nothing is impossible in politics and no one should be surprised to see both BJP and PDP exploring possibilities of forming new government without each other" said a former Minister, wishing not to be named.
