| Mehbooba's reluctance makes BJP uncomfortable | | Not mandatory after father's death, daughter has to become the Chief Minister, says Subramanian Swamy | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 11: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti showing reluctance to take over as the 13th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after the demise of her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has sent its coalition partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) into tizzy.
BJP leaders were hoping that Mehbooba would take charge after the fourth day mourning ceremony of her father and PDP would make the first move but PDP president seems in no hurry.
Mehbooba not opening her cards vis-à-vis government formation in Jammu and Kashmir is has BJP leadership in tight spot as they are unable to read what's in her mind and has its coalition with PDP in Jammu and Kashmir come to an abrupt end.
The BJP general Secretary Ram Madhav on Mondaymade it clear that his party wants coalition with PDP to continue in Jammu and Kashmir and PDP should make the first move.
On the other hand another senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who has his hands deep in 'Ram Mandir' issue, on Monday said it is not mandatory for Mehbooba to follow her father's footsteps.
Apparently upset over the reports that PDP is setting new conditions for the alliance, Swamy said, "Let there be President's rule for a year and then if they want election they can do it. If new conditions are imposed then it is an act of bad faith. It should not be a question of dynasty. It is not mandatory that after father's death, daughter has to become the Chief Minister," Swamy said. "If they negotiate with the new conditions, even we will have conditions. My suggestion is if they keep conditions then we will also keep condition that Article 370 be removed. If they do not agree with the condition then why this coalition should go on?" he added.
it is in place to mention here that speculations are rife since yesterday that Mehbooba has set four conditions for carrying on the coalition with BJP.
Sources said the conditions put forward by Mehbooba are no deputy chief minister role for BJP, bigger portfolios for PDP ministers, avoid sensitive issues and more central assistance for JK.
The PDP leaders are maintaining silence over the issue and have put the ball in their President's court. "Mehooobaji has to take the final decision. It would be too premature to comment on any of the issues pertaining government formation," he added.
Asked about the conditions which PDP has reportedly put, the leader said, "We should not come to conclusions so fast. Let's see what happens."
Mehbooba Mufti who met her party leaders on Sundayevening first time after her father's demise, according to the sources, didn't discuss anything political with them and there was no mention about the government formation. The meeting revolved around PDP leaders condoling the demise and expressing solidarity with their President.
If PDP insiders are to be believed, "Mehbooba is no hurry and she has not taken any decision yet," claimed an insider.
As far as the BJP leaders are concerned they have been left red faced now they are putting counter conditions to build the pressure on PDP and its leadership but at present nothing seems to be working. Suspense about government formation is continuing. |
