Sonia met Mehbooba to offer condolence not support : Cong | | | Majid Nabi
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 11 : Clearing air over the meeting of Congress Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti at her residence yesterday, state Congress on Monday claimed that the meeting was aimed at offering commiseration and not 'support'. Pertinent to mention here that Congress President Sonia Gandhi along with senior party leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ambika Soni visited the residence of Mehbooba Mufti in Srinagar to offer condolences on the demise of her father and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The delay in government formation set off speculation of political realignment in the state, however the Congress party maintained that it was not a political visit. "Congress party is not authorized to extend support to form a government with PDP in the state, since the two parties are already in coalition how could we offer our support, although the onus lies with PDP President with whom she would like to go at the moment," PCC General Secretary, Surinder Singh Channi told reporters at party headquarters here. Putting speculations about the grand alliance between National Conference, Congress and PDP at rest, Singh said "people are free to express their views however there is no such proposal from our side" He said the Congress Chairperson Sonia Gnadhi's visit was aimed at offering condolence to Mehbooba Mufti and her family on the demise of her father and sitting Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. "Mufti Sahab was the State Congress President for over twelve years and it was the moral obligation of Sonia JI to visit his family and offer condolence in this hour of grief. She was accompanied with Ghulam Nabi Azad and Amibika Soni however there is no question of offering support to form government," he said. Replying to a query about the 'impediment' in government formation after the death of Mufti Sayeed, he said "such circumstances are obvious as the death of Mufti Sahab has shocked his daughter; she needs time to come out of the distress. The PCC leader further said that Congress did not offer any support to PDP as the alliance between BJP and PDP is still intact. "Yes we had offered support to PDP a year before, but as far the present circumstances are concerned there is a combine government in the state. Mehbooba ji is a mature politician and she knows what is best for her party. We could only advice her to read the writings on wall," he said. |
