Beigh's presence unnerves many in PDP | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 11 : The founding member of the People's Democratic Party, Muzaffar Hussain Beigh seems to have taken command over the party after the demise of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and this has unnerved some leaders who remained ministers under Mufti's tenure. Since the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti has been mourning the demise of her father, it is Muzaffar Hussain Beigh, who has been issuing the statements on behalf of the party and sidelined some party leaders, who have remained ministers before imposition of Governor Rule in the state. Beigh has been very critical of the PDP-BJP government in the past, but sources said his suggestions are being taken very seriously in the party including by Mehbooba Mufti. "Muzaffar Beigh is the first person who has backed Mehbooba's candidature for chief ministership. His recent statement clearly indicates that he enjoys full confidence of Mehbooba , which is unnerving some party leaders who joined PDP just ahead of Assembly elections," sources within the party said. Although he had remained away from party activities after the PDP-BJP formed government in the state, he has been very active for the past three weeks. It was he who along with Altaf Bukhari handed over a letter of support to Governor backing Mehbooba Mufti as the next chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. In the first three days after Mufti's demise, sources said it was Muzaffar Beigh, Prof Amitabh Mattoo, Syed Altaf Bukhari and Sartaj Madni, who had access to Mehbooba's room. Beigh said Mehbooba will become the chief minister of J&K and party should make a fresh start to give good governance in the state. Apparently referring to some party leaders who remained ministers and joined the party ahead of Assembly elections, Beigh told a national daily that some ministers in the government are newcomers and are arrogant. "They don't know the cadres, they don't know who their voters are, they are contemptuous of the cadres. This has to change," Beigh said apparently referring to Haseeb Drabu. "This statement is a clear indication that Beigh will have a good say in the party in the future owing which many leaders feel uncomfortable," a PDP leader said. "Besides Mehbooba Mufti, who has full backing of the party to be chief minister, the party is reposing faith in Muzaffar Beigh," he said. Sources said Beigh may also be party's President after Mehbooba taking over as chief minister of the state.
