Govt formation: Situation may turn out to be 'advantageous' for Mehbooba | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 11: With Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti not displaying her cards as yet, the stalemate over the formation of next government in the state continues. This is despite the fact that many speculations are doing rounds in this regard. The dropping in of Congress leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Ambika Soni and Ghulam Nabi Azad at the residence of Muftis following the demise of PDP Patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has given a 'fillip' to speculations that Congress wants to form the next government in Jammu & Kashmir with PDP. However, this has been ruled out by leaders of both Congress and PDP. Sources told Early Times that PDP President would not like to align with Congress at this point of time since it would send a wrong signal to rank and file of the party. The PDP cadre who believed their Patron would feel disillusioned if the party President chose to go with Congress and form the next government with them. "Mufti Sayeed had at the time of stitching alliance with BJP said that an arrangement with Congress would have meant that the mandate given by the people of Jammu division has not been considered and respected as well. He had maintained that PDP-BJP coalition would mean that the two regions of state are joined. Given this situation how can Mehbooba go against the observations of her father," said sources. Sources at the same time said that the demise of Mufti Sayeed has thrown up challenges which have to be faced by party leadership especially its President. They said that it would be difficult but not impossible for Mehbooba to keep the flock together as was done in a crafted manner by her father. "The death of former chief minister has in a way given advantage to Mehbooba to stand up and deliver to her potential since she knows the pulse of party workers and leaders. She is in an advantageous position vis-à-vis the party's relations' with BJP at this point of time. Mehbooba can easily plead that she can go with Congress with respect to government formation provided the BJP does not cooperate with her," said sources. Sources said that BJP cannot afford to displease the PDP President and as such may be 'forced' to concede the demands set out by Mehbooba at this critical juncture. In other words we can say that PDP is in a win-win situation with BJP being the loser in this whole 'deal'. Allegations have already been leveled against BJP that they played second fiddle in the previous PDP-BJP coalition government. "The PDP President would not show any urgency in forming the government. She would like to bargain something with BJP once the formal negotiations start as far as formation of government is concerned. But it is for sure that she would like to carry forward the arrangement made by her father with BJP in the state more than 10 months back," said sources. Sources also ruled out any major changes in the set up as and when the alliance is re-stitched with BJP in state with regard to government formation. There might be a change or two in the set up, but not wholesale ones as are being presumed by some. The portfolios would remain the same with minor changes expected, they said. |
