PHE misappropriates funds in crores, people deprived of drinking water | | | Arun Kumar Early Times Report
KATHUA, Jan 11: Both Union and state governments make several claims of development in the state but reality differs at ground. Thousands of people are being deprived of drinking water supply in several areas due to which people fetch drinking water from ponds, river, ditches that too after covering a distance of several miles. Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department constructed two water reservoirs few years back but fails to provide drinking water supply for a decade. Thousands of people hailing from Janglote East, Kaniyari and other adjoining villages are affected due to deficiency on the part of PHE department's employees. According to a guideline, officials must dig 3 feet deep pits for installing pipes but pipes are not fit under the ground resulting damage to water pipes. New pipes of 2.5 inch of width were installed besides old 4 inch useless water pipes. "Ironically former MLA Charanjeet Singh belonged to same village but could not provide water supply that pointed out his working during six years of tenure in JK Assembly," Ch. Nek Mohd alleged and added that large number funds meant to restore water supply in villages were drawn out from government treasury but could not be properly used and PHE officials misappropriated fund in crore on spreading of 1400 feet long water pipes. Ch. Nek Mohd said new pipes are useless as these are not connected properly with reservoirs and defunct tube well. Ch Nek said PHE Minister makes claim for development in PHE sector but nothing has been done at ground level and people are suffering due to ignorance of officials. He appealed the minister to restore water supply. Khem Raj another local said woman fetch water from ponds, rivers and ditches for domestic purpose through wilderness path that threat to their security too. He sought severe inquiry against tainted officials who despite having knowledge about already existing useless water, spread new pipes on same rows to squander government fund. He demanded restoration of water supply to facilitate people at large scale. When contacted PHE AEE (Civil) Opinder Singh refuted all the allegations leveled on PHE department for misappropriation of funds. He said department works with dedication and water supply will be restored soon subject to completion of light box, other infrastructure and availability of funds. |
