As Cong comes closer, PDP likely to divorce BJP

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Jan 11: The chances of PDP saying good bye to its 10-month alliance partner BJP and joining hands with Congress for a possible alliance to run the next Government seem bright after Sonia Gandhi's meeting with Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday.
According to sources close to both PDP and Congress, the new equations are being drawn and there will be a possible alignment between the two parties for the formation of a next Government in the State to keep the BJP out of power.
Sources said even the National Conference (NC) which is an arch rival of PDP will not oppose the move for time being and instead try to offer support from outside to gain public sympathy and also give a feeling that it wanted to keep BJP out, sources added.
Sources said calculating the political gains NC will try to offer outside support to pull back at the appropriate time when it feels the situation will be conducive for it for holding midterm poll. The Party has also kept many options before it one is that after aligning with Congress, the Centre may not be so liberal in giving funds as it has been under an arrangement with BJP earlier. The delay in release of funds from Centre may retard the development process in the State which in turn can create problems for the Government and growing public resentment as well, sources added.
Sources said NC will maintain its stoic silence till date and once it feels that the situation is conducive it will withdraw outside support forcing the midterm poll.
However there is still a strong group in PDP as well which does not like to either go with NC or Congress at this juncture, sources said. Apprising party chief of previous experience and role of her father in revival of Congress in the State as its president and leader of Opposition during late eighties and later betrayal of the Congress High Command in Delhi by joining hands with NC against the wishes of Mufti Mohammed Sayeed which forced him to join the Jan Morcha of V P Singh is an eye opener for the party to maintain a distance from Congress.
This group according to sources has also made it clear to Party chief that after rejoining Congress in late nineties Mufti Mohammed Sayeed was not given the recognized position by the Party which again forced him to quit and frame PDP, sources said. Mehbooba was further informed that it was the BJP which ruled at Centre encouraged Sayeed in formation of PDP and provided all logistic support from Centre in creating a political alternative to NC in the State. Later the victory of PDP in Kashmir, BJP extended all support to Sayeed in formation of a coalition with Congress.
Mehbooba was also told by this group that it was Congress which demanded rotational CM during its coalition with PDP and Mufti was forced to quit after three years in 2005 to pave way for Ghulam Nabi Azad to take over as next CM, sources said. Later in 2008 when Congress joined coalition with NC no condition of rotational CM was kept and Omar Abdullah was asked to continue for full six years term, sources added.
Sources said this group has asked Mehbooba that in comparison to it BJP has extended full support to the Mufti as CM and also the Party ministers worked under him in a disciplined manner. They did not rake up the controversy to embarrass the PDP and hence the Party can be much trusted ally than Congress or any other group.
