History didn't repeat itself in JK this time | In 1982, Farooq took oath on same night when Sheikh died | | Peerzada Ummer
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 11 : The history in Jammu and Kashmir didn't repeat itself this time with PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti delaying her oath ceremony after her father's death which goes contrary to what NC patron Dr Farooq did when Sheikh Abdullah, his father, died on September 8, 1982. It was on the very night of September 8, 1982, that Dr Farooq Abdullah took oath as the chief minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. His father, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah after falling ill, died during the evening of September 8, 1982. Many veterans in Jammu and Kashmir had a firm belief that the PDP chief would follow the same suits and would be sworn in as the next CM after her father's death. But Mehbooba, apparently, turned adamant to change the course of history- giving wide berth to such a prestigious post and preferred to mourn her father's death instead of taking over the reins of power in the state. Mehbooba's categorical 'no' to the prestigious chair for now has sent strong signals across with the sympathy wave turning in her favour in the state. "She has shown everyone when what a daughter can do for her father. She has become a symbol of selflessness and courageous sprit," says Manzoor Ahmad Dar, a south Kashmir resident and a PDP supporter. At the time when Mufti had a last breath in AIIMS and the tragic news reached the state, everyone was expecting Mehbooba to take over in next day or two. But with the passing of more than five days with no possibilities of her assuming office in sight, the history hasn't repeated itself in the state. Rather, Mufti's daughter strived to change the course of history. The story of people exhibiting hurry in grabbing state's top most chair goes back to 1982. The national conference, then led by its founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, witnessed rebellion within when Sheikh announced his son Dr Farooq as his next heir for the post. It gave rise to rebellion with Sheikh's son-in-law Ghulam Mohammad Shah in open opposing such a move. It compelled Shah to resign from the party. Just a few days after Sheikh Abdullah's health worsened with each passing day resulting in chaos and disorder within the government departments. Then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited Srinagar on September 5, 1982 to inquire about Sheikh health. Merely, two days after her return to New Delhi, the NC founder breathed his last on September 8, 1982. On that very fateful night, without even the delay of the single day, Dr Farooq took oath as the next chief minister of the state. He all of a sudden went for the cabinet revamp- showing door to various NC veterans who were discharging duties as the cabinet ministers in Sheikh's council. The religious clerics in Hazaratbal too jumped into the chorus in unison- accepting Dr Farooq's elevation as his father's next heir. After around 34 years when similar scenes were witnessed in the state with PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti at the place where Dr Farooq was once, things became drastically different with Mehbooba showing people all across that father's love comes first and is supreme than any post in the world including that of the chief minister. |
